I imported a 1970 2CV to the US, but not California.
If the vehicle is not modified for its year and you are a US resident, you can use the antique car exclusion to do this.
Make sure you follow all the US customs regulations and it should be ok. Look them up online. The cheapest expeditor that I have found is EconoCaribe, and they speak French.
Be aware of people who will all be holding out their hand to provide a necessary service and get an extra 50-100 off of you, because they can. I never mind paying for service but I dislike parasites.
