Freind of mine stops by the house 4 years ago, says he's broke and needs his beetle running..I told him to pull his motor and I'd fix him up for free, provided he didnt get picky over parts, most of the stuff would come from the stash...when I measured it out the case was cut .080 over, crank .040 under...the case was so heat warped you could stick a 5/16th washer in the parting line at the top..he scraped up enough for a set of mains, rods cam bearings and rings,I threw in the gasket set and built it..Above shots are from today about 30k later, one head wont hold a timesert any more so he dropped it over with a used head he bought at BOR..What never ceases to amaze me is how long a junker can run if you assemble it correctly,I would have scrapped his case if he wasnt broke..Ill put the head on and i bet he'll go another 4 years..he drives the damn thing like it owes him money too..

You think that's bad?
My first Beetle had a heater box replaced with pieces of steel pipe.
The PO tapped the exhaust outlet port in the head, threaded a 1.25" long, 1.25" OD steel pipe into it, added a 90 degree elbow, another 5" piece of pipe, another 90 degree elbow, and another pipe that went back to the muffler ! The only reason it failed was because he couldn't get enough threads into the port to securely hold it.
I'm not even sure why he did it, because the studs on the head were in good shape! Must have been a plumber or something!

preparation for a fixin,no 'spreading shit on the garage floor' crap for me,no sir..none of that "get your grandma to help you lift the engine" either...nope,set up proper so a man can work in a standing comfortable position.

My friend supplied the head,he hustled it at BOR,twenty bucks..as any smart purchaser uf used heads, versed in the "johnnypan method" of used head procurement, he chose an UNCRACKED head, with tight wiggle tested guides...a couple of small dings in one combustion chamber which I fixed by hand since flycutting doesnt work on a dished surface.

reused the rockers I installed 4 years ago..wavy washers and adjster screws still serviceable..spritzed then with brake clean, ready to install.

homeboy also found some fresh pushrod tubes and seals..he didnt steal them either, onna count they didnt have ass cheese on them...fat Dave is know for sticking purloined parts in his ass..he once stuck a bay bus wing window assembly complete in his ass at picknpull..yep,I saw it,and its something Id like to forget.

How does platinum plugs cause that pitting? Did it break in there? Detonation?

Regards,
Mike

So it ends up just bouncing around? Hammering the crap out of the head?

Weird.

That is weird. I don't use them on my bug, but the LT1 in my Chevy has had platinum ACDelcos for 19 years and 180K miles, no issues.

It sure as hell isn't that high compression in a VW motor! I'd be interested to learn more about this.

Regardless, good for you Johnny for helping a friend. That comes back around. Usually to bite you in the rear, but still....

The platinum thing sure is weird. If I had to guess I would say that since we are aircooled our heating and cooling of the engine curves are different, maybe the temperature differences cause accelerated wear on the plug, whereas watercooled engines hold a more steady temp. But that's a shot in the dark, total guess.

Thats a hunch on the platinum plugs,Ive noticed it on two engines, chunks of electrode missing and dings on the head..

thanks for the props pb,I dont care to build engines for pocket money anymore,vw folks are way too finicky and way too cheap..nope,all I'll do is free stuff for the brothers..that engine is a testament to the durability of vw design, for all rights that case should be a boat anchor..along with the PC's..his crank was good but on the last cut,the cam was starting to get a little wavy four years ago..yet it runs and runs..
