I have what in my home state are called "collector car" plates on my buggy.

Very similar rules here as described in the article. I have two collector vehicles that I have collector plates on. While my use of both is occasional it would not technically fit the limitations of the licensing. That I have other vehicles that have regular plates is a good thing...I think if your collector car was the only car that came up under your name you might have some 'splainin to do, Lucy.

My pickup is a 67 Chev. I was tempted a few years ago and went to the DOL and was asked "do you have any plan to ever put anything in the bed of the truck?" I picked up what they were putting down and got regular truck plates.

A few pics of my cars at car shows are kept on my phone in case it comes up, but never has. Yet.

In Illinois, once a vehicle reaches a certain age, there are several choices that an owner has regarding license plates.
Along with the normal automobile plates, we have 2 choices. First, is the more restrictive AV plate that allows being
to & from parades, shows, events, maintenance shop, all year. I believe they also desire a limit on mileage for the
AV plate. Then we have the EA plate (Expanded Antique) with basically the same driving restrictions as the regular
AV plate during November thru March of each year. During April through October unlimited driving just like a daily driver.

We also have a YOM (Year of Manufacture) option, if you can find a good set of plates in the year the vehicle was
assembled. You do not have to register the ‘old’ plates, just hang them on the car, and be 100% sure that you have the
EA plate in the car with the registration cert. There is no requirement to report the YOM plate to the state. I have learned
to also be sure to have a copy of the Illinois law that explains the use of the YOM plates to LEOS who do not know
how to look it up before they attempt to write you for improper registration. If they stop you, all you do is hand them
the plastic wrapped antique plates with the registration, and insurance information. I really love it when the
small towns around here get a new cop.

Best of all the EA plate is only $52.00 per year. The new laws really put a lot more pleasure back into owning an older
vehicle, while reducing all the crap we have to put up with the old antique plates in years past. I could not believe it when
our DMV equivalent said that there is no requirement to register the YOM plate.

I guess it depends upon where you live... not only is Maryland one of the most roadside-trashy states, it seems every 3rd driver is on a cell phone, use of a turn signal must have been associated with Obamacare on the news ..and Historic plates may be available at Payday Loan centers?!

Even tho' the verbiage: " A vehicle registered as historic cannot be used for general daily transportation, or primarily for the transportation of passengers or property on highways...yatta."

Anybody who wants to avoid inspections and maintenance seems to use these plates for general transportation. Almost every old, beater car/truck I see has them. "It's 10am/Tuesday ..there must be a parade somewhere?!"

I've not heard that before, color me intrigued...Does it have to be a real YOM plate? Can it be a YOM reproduction too?

...By that I mean. Say you have a personalized EA plate for your 1968 Bug, and then buy a 1968 plate reproduction that says the some thing as your EA plate; and put the reproduction plates on your car?

What nightmanx describes is also allowed in WA state. This plate was an old one I had lying around during my build. Didn't use it. The YOM plate for my car would be later, still stamped but the colors reversed (green letters on white).

I have a set of those plates too. You only need one plate here if you go with the collector plates.

In Virginia the law is pretty decent. . I currently have my buggy with Antique plates in my garage. The statue says that the vehicle is not to be used for transportation to and from work or general use. It may be used to go to and from shows, repair shops, vehicle testing, car club activities, and occasional pleasure use not more than 200 miles from it’s home garage. So if you wanted to drive all over the country taking the car to shows it would be perfectly fine. Best of all is that the registration is permanent. You never have to renew! And no state inspections- you self certify. It was pretty easy to get the plates. 20 minutes at the DMV with the right paperwork and it was a done deal.

prkid424, I live near Richmond and there is a huge number of vehicles taking advantage of the antique plates and I look for the DMV to have a crack down. I too have antique plates on my buggy and use it rarely for anything, other than what you had mentioned. To get the plates, you have to have another "primary" vehicle. We have 4 cars with plates, one of them is antique. Today, while driving my wife's car, I followed a Datsun 260Z with antique plates, on his way home from work. I also have a friend with a pickup that he uses for his work truck. Yep, antique plates. He has been warned that they are not for that purpose.
