Finished cobbling my EMPI steering wheel together a few months back.
I waited several months for HOG to use their mold to build more dash caps....
Yesterday I ordered a dash cap......... from Glass-Action. We shall check this option out for everyone. Instead of their mounting system, Im going to epoxy bolts in the stock location to hold it down. I also plan on covering it in matching black vinyl. Not sure if I will swap in a lowlight grab handle or just keep with the current one, decisions, decisions...Will have to wait and see if I go french stitch or early ribbed style on the vinyl. I still need to mount my FV tach (its just zip tied to column), open to any ideas
Current...

I didn't have the holes in my dash to use the stock mounting when I got my dash pad (HOG) and they of course didn't come with any...so I ended up using industrial strength Velcro...worked good for me.
For the tach, is it the same size as the clock (Hard to tell from the pic)? But if so, since your clock isn't original and has different colored hands, might consider swapping the tach in there?
Just a thought.. |

^^^Cant do that! I just got a trip speedo!!
Look what showed up in the mail today. Glass Actions dash cap. Initial thought, for $102 shipped to my door in less than a week, tough to beat.
I didnt wait long to give it a test fit. 10 minutes at lunch to get the grab handle off and...
Initial fit isnt bad. Its made wide, width wise. You can see in this pic I have close to 1/2 inch to custom fit.
To get perfect fit I was told to trim/sand/shorten the leading edge (near window). That should tighten it over the dash and get it tight under the window seal.
If i push the cap tight to the right...
There is a little space on the left, but not much.
I think once covered in vinyl and centered should fit pretty well. Now I need to decide early ribbed w/ lowlight handle of French stitch across the front...hmm. Going to plan a trip to Julio's Upholstery next week. _________________ GhiaBuild

Looks good...and covered will look "right". Will you attach the grab handle to it as well? Or leave that off? |

You're going to be a tough act to follow. I repaired and then covered my dash pad with French stitching across the front. I still have to see if it fits, but it helps to know I can trim it on the sides.
I also got a wooden steering wheel from Cip1, and will have to work out how to fit that in the next two weeks or so.
Your car looks really, really good, inside and out. And a '68, to top it all. Now who would have thought? _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I worked on a few little projects recently.
I recieved in trade some nice Hella tail lights. Euro taillights one is NOS the other just really, really nice Unless you stare for a bit and closely you can not tell which is NOS or the nice one
I used an original swan neck mirror and added a Albert pear shape mirror head on it.
I went and had my GlassAction dash cap covered in matching black vinyl with the French stitch across the front. I did not discuss thread color with my upholstery guy, I just assumed he would use the linen/off white color of the piping. He used black and it has grown on me, It doesnt stand out as much, more reserved. I like it. As far as installing, the dash cap is held on by one screw under the driver side door A pillar. The grab handle holds down the other side so just one screw in original location. Also made a little steering tube clamp to hold my FV Rev Counter, it had just been zip tied the last few months. I disassembled my VDO Quartz clock and painted the blaze orange hands off white to closer match the other gauges.
I also polished up my lowlight grab handle and had it wrapped in leather. I recently read Lorens response re grab handle seals on a padded dash. As I am ALL about keeping things perfectly stock and original, I may not be using Dwaynes fine work on the seals.
To install the single stud lowlight handle, I drilled 2 new holes right in the middle of the 2 holes used on the later 2 stud grab handle. Always seems like there is something else to do on this car _________________ GhiaBuild

The devil is in the detail, and you're making that devil look like an amateur. And that on Karmann Ghia's "Michael-in-the-middle" child. The '68 is mechanically the best of the '67 and earlier Ghias, and the best looking of the post '67 ones.
In my humble opinion. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Thanks Chris, and I am a middle child :D
Now how did you create almost 50 pages in your build thread and I can barely squeak out 6 :(
What are you doing, writing a freaking book over there? |
I'm a first child; totally spoilt by my mother. But also obessive-compulsive, as first children often are. Middle child is the lucky one; no fuss no bother people.
I went to a writers' festival in 2002 - before I started writing - and Jeffery Deaver told the audience that he writes 70 pages of outline before he writes his 300 page novel. I have about 60 pages of outline on my Saving Emiko story, with about 10 to go, and no idea how to bring the story to an exciting and credible conclusion. The rest of my thread is probably just recounting - as in a diary - what I've done each day, plus some conversation with my friends on the Samba.
At any rate, I'm sure you write as much as I do, except that you're writing a most of it on other people's threads helping them with their restorations and repairs. For which we are grateful. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Awesome so far, you guys are definitely inspiring! I love that dash cover, it looks great. I really didn't want to have to use the plastic wood dash face and this is definitely worth the time of making the dash look good for paint!
I'm also amazed that you painted this in your garage! great job. _________________ -Jared

+1. And it took only 4 years for someone to call that out. Plus I noticed you didn't even hang tarp for a diy paint bay... you must be one confident painter and it certainly shows. I'm guessing you weld without gloves too. Love it! _________________ 1971 Ghia coupe. Assume I know nothing and you'll be pretty darn close to the truth. |

Painting is a pretty misunderstood art, like there is black magic involved. Its scary because you dont want to screw anything up at this late stage in your build. We wet down the garage before we painted sans booth, tarps, fans...we kept the garage door open. We picked a nice, windless, overcast morning, got lucky is more accurate. This was a team effort. My paint mentor Albert shooting the exterior of the car then handing off the gun to me... I only painted the inside, you know the part covered by Rattletrap, carpet, under gas tank firewalls, bottom of engine area, back seat anything where the painter is on knees, back, or squatting . The master is the guy who does the part people see. There were very few things on this build that were not done by me at my house. One of the smarter things i did was to pay a pro to color sand for me. Last Christmas I went to a local All Cars car show and won "Best Paint", Accepting I mentioned it was a garage paint job. Lots of "really?" afterwards.
@ J1,90% of the time 2 gloves. i like to position the welding gun then close my eyes and pull the trigger, we dont need no stinking welding helmet _________________ GhiaBuild

Next I stripped the body of everything including paint.
While working on the package tray i noticed someone at Karmann decided to sign my car in grease pencil or something before paint. Anyone seen something like this on any other ghias??
|
It says "fichte", meaning fir, as in the color it was to be sprayed (green).
One further down says "gelb", meaning yellow...
(Ooops just now saw later in the thread that someone else already clarified that)
No signatures, those had to wait til the Mac and Amiga guys started signing their cases...
AWESOME restauration Darrel!
I am in awe...
