Reverse gear troubles

Hello! I've got an issue when trying to go in reverse. One of two things will happen: My buggy will move backwards for a second or two, but then grinds and acts like it's jumping into another gear, or it will make a whirring sound and the wheels won't move at all. I'm thinking the reverse gear has gone bad, but I wanted to post on hear before I took any action. Any thoughts on what could be causing this? Thanks.

Check your shifter adjustment, and your coupler under the back seat. Remember, your shifter when pushed into reverse will pull the shift rod "forward" towards the front of the car to engage reverse.

Sounds like it just isn't going into the gear all the way.
