|
|
On my way home today, I was sitting in traffic and noticed that my temperature was not as hot as it should be. I live in the SF Bay Area. Generally my temp gauge, at cruising on highway stays just under the LED to right in the middle. Unless I'm in traffic at which point it rises to about 2/3rds and I can hear the high fan come on. I've never had an overheat.
Today while in stop and go traffic, doing between 0 and 20-25, I noticed that my temp gauge was just below the LED where yesterday it would have been around 2/3rds. Fan still came on.
I brought her home let her cool for a bit then started her up. Low fan came on just before the LED and high fan came on towards the end of the LED.
Anyone? |

Does sound like the gauge is lying to you. I suspect the sender is more likely the culprit than the gauge itself.
Somewhere on the Samba are the values for testing the sender. |

My fuel sender has been out since I've owned the van so I can't honestly tell you if the fuel gauge is acting up. Just haven't gotten around to dropping the tank. Seems like it's always full of fuel everytime I think about doing it!! Haha!
I'll start with the values at the temp sender. |

SF area?
Don't count out corrosion right @ the sender connections from the refreshing sea breezes... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

Yes Bay Area. I haven't noticed any real corrosion on any of the grounds or anything. Are you saying at the wire connection or at the actual threads? |

If you have a 1.9, the sender for the gauge just has a single wire clipped on to it(not sure what the 2.1 has). it is very common for that connection to get corroded. Pop the wire off, clean the two surfaces, make sure there is a firm connection and see where that gets you.

2.1 sender:
Connector (pic courtesy of Alistair):
FWIW: My gauge started drooping shortly after I got the van - I found the sender with
no connector and no boot, corroding away quite nicely... I cleaned it up, wrapped
with tape & slathered on liquid vinyl & it's been dead on for the past 4 years.
Which reminds me...anyone have a nice spare temp sender connector with boot laying around...???
