I wonder what intake manifolds they ran on them back then. I noticed a lot of them are cocked outboard to form a V shape.

Methanol was used, injected it let the engine run cooler too so they didn't need the dog house cooler. They used injectors designed for v-8 cars that bolted in straight causing that weird angle.

The new season of the CHCA racing will begin this weekend in Canyon City Colorado. Last weekend they had several race cars pulled in the annual Blossom Festival parade. Nice to see a VW powered N/D still racing. This car was first raced by Gary Potter on Pikes Peak in 1977

This is the most seen picture from the PPHC in 1976. That is the winning N/D #48 on the top of the Peak. Left to right : Paul Newman, Doug Dreager and Rick Mears. Always wonder about what other cars that you can see in this picture.

Just came across this picture and now I know ! Same year just a different angle.

Notice Rick's helmet on the wing of his N/D. Other cars , #92 sprint car of Bobby Unser, Mustang is a 429 raced by Dick Foltz, Frank Peterson's Olds Omega, and sprint car #31 behind the N/D. You can also see the Turbo Buick pace car in the upper right.

Have you seen the new computer programs that race car designers use to develop new cars ?

Back in the 70s it was done on scrap paper or before that chalk lines on the floor.

These are notes from Doug Dreager and Paul Newman when they designed the 2nd generation of N/D race cars for the PPHC.

Just think what it would be like to get the same notes from FUNCO, Meyers Manx or Dean Jeffries and his Kyote

Thanks go out to Doug and Paul for providing so much information with all of us VW racing fans

History was in the making at the Carlisle Import and Kit Nationals May 13-15.

Don Wilcox who one of the first two people to race the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in dune buggies. The year was 1966 . Don brought his car to the show.this past weekend. He was the top qualifier in the Sports Car Class on the Peak in 66. He had some trouble on race day but teammate , Ted Trevor won the class in another Meyers Manx. Don has owned this car for over 40 years. Look for the video of Bruce and Don chatting about the car too. Thanks go out to the folks at the Manx Facebook page for these pictures !

First time I have seen the car in COLOR, knew Ted's was purple. Amazing in many ways.

1st dune buggy product slash VW' concept to run on Pikes Peak. They truely shocked the racing community at how well they did.

Plus the fact that Don has raced and owned this car for SO MANY years.

Don Wilcox on the right and Bruce Meyer left. Historic day in Pennsylvania !

Found another hill climb race that VW's competed in that maybe some of the PPHC racers attended.

If you have any additional info please post or IM me. Would like to get ahold of some of the entry lists. Being close to Colorado and California ,you would think some of the Newman-Dreager race car drivers would raced here too.

Very Happy The 2015 Pikes Peak Hill Climb race is here!

Porsche is strong once again
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The two 914 (V8s) are far from being Porsche, but they look and run wicked.

Sead Causevic is back for his 2nd year in his 2010 Jetta running in the" Time Attack 1" class. He had a good week of practice.
Justin Wilson#45 in his rookie year on the Peak, brought a wonderful 2003 GT3 Cup car

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Nice electric bug was at Fan Fest, built in the 90s by the Manitou Springs High School. The teacher used this car for a daily driver for over ten years. It was displayed to show the difference in the advancement of the electric cars over the years. The bottom car is Nobuhiro"Monster" Tajima's 1.1 MEGAWATT electric car. Look for Monster to have the fastest overall time of the race. Weather holding he MAY have a chance to break the overall record.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Jeff Zwart #111 was extremely fast in practice and qualifying in his 2013 Porsche 911. Look for Jeff to take another class win. Biggest noise of the week has been a local battle of David Donner #911 in the 2014 Porsche 911 S racing against Randy Pobst in his 2009 Nissan GTR (Godzilla) .Practice times were back and forth and too close to call. I will go out on a limb and call the winner! The Fans will win !!!

Tragedy struck again this year. 2nd year in a row, for the motorcycle class. With speeds increasing drastically, due to the complete paving all the way to the top, motorcycle racing on the Peak may be in jeopardy. Hope not.

Will get back here after race day!

This was one of the lead stories for the 1977 Hill Climb. (Yellow # 1 car)

FYI: The 2016 PPIHC will only have 100 entries allowed. 67 cars and 33 motorcycles. Some kind of tie in to the 100th anniversary of the race. Entry fees went sky high too. After last year, glad to see bikes still being able to race.

1960 was a good year for Porsche at the Hill Climb. Three RSK's ran, Bob Donner, Roger Ward, Mike Collins and Thomas Greatorex in an RS

Another one found ! Dan Diehl only ran the Peak once. In 1975, he had trouble during practice, but ran a 13:41 on race day, respectable. Car was listed as a Diehl VW 2180 from Tulsa Oklahoma.

Notice the passenger front wheel ??

Getting closer to having a picture of EVERY VW powered race car that ran PPHC

Good job to go off the side of the mountain and tear off the right front corner in practice on Tuesday, then set a good time on race day.

Also note that the front suspension is swingaxle, very similar to early Funco Wampuskitty design. Funco continued to use that design until at least the early 90s for short course cars. And there was an old Funco short course race buggy with that front suspension brought out of retirement a few years ago to race Class 10 in the desert.

That does look like Funco bodywork. But the cage looks like Grizzly or Newman Drager. Maybe a re-caged Funco? Or Funco body on a Grizzly or N-D? Any other shots of the car?

Jay Stewart's early attempts at Pikes Peak were with Corvair power. This is from 1973. Jay went on to run many years using VW powered race cars at the PPHC

Great car, Ken Blockhan from 1972. Only Formula Vee to race the PPHC . Ken owned a wrecker service close to the Pikes Peak Highway and was on the road just about daily. He knew the course really well! He still owns the car as of 2015. Ran a 2180 VW and had sponsorship from Heubeger VW in Colorado Springs and a local melodrama , Bob Young's Cabaret.
