Wondering if the 4 spoke, flat steering wheel in Type 1 Super Beetles (1973+) can be used in a 1973 412 without doing any modifications?
Similar to this one:
Thanks. |

What wheel do you have in there now? The late type 4 wheels are four spoke. Are you looking for that particular wheel with the leather grip and snazzier center ornament?
If its just the center section that should snap right on.
The part # for the late type 4 steering wheel is 113 415 651H.

That steering wheel is from '74 and '75 Sun Bugs and La Grande Bugs, and later convertibles. I have an extra that I wanted to put on my '74 412 Variant. I might be able to test it out this weekend and let you know if it fits OK. The splines changed from '73 to '74 so it may not fit your '73. |
Yes....I was thinking that the splines may be differnt....but at the very least the center spoke cover should snap right on. Ray |

Thanks Ray! Below is a picture of the steering wheel currently in the 412. As you can see, the plastic wheel is cracked as well. So, I just cant't snap on a new cover. That said, do you think a T1 wheel would work?

If you want the exact wheel....1972 and 1973 I believe are identical. Also.....you can trade your wheel for an expertly refurbed one from Koch's or buy their refurb kit.
The process is cleanjng the cracks by abrasive and degreaser....then application of a special epoxy putty.....then filing and sanding just like body work....than an exact factory color plastic enamel....and the wheel looks brand new.

My ultimate preference would be to use the more 'snazzy' VW bug wheel, identical to the photo on the top of this thread. Not sure if they are interchangeable or not?? |

Also I meant to note....that 1972 snd 1973 type 3 use the same wheel as 72 and on type 4. Ray |

Good to know. How about a 4 spoke bug? Can I use one of them? |

That would be superbeetle in general. My bet is yes. I have gotten junkyard wiper and washer lever assemblies from supers and they drop right in. Ray |

I used one of those 74 Super Beetle wheels in my 72 411. So if 73 412 has the same splines as 72 411 it will fit. |

Lars, So a 1974 SB will fit the 412? If so, that is great news. Someone told me that the 1973-only SB had different splines, so I guess that year is out.
So now I'm on the hunt for a 1974+ SB steering wheel for my 412! |

If it isn't too much trouble, I would appreciate it Lars. Thanks for offering. At least now we will be able to add this to 'parts compatible with other VW's'.
I like the steering wheel with the white Wolfsburg crest. I think it will look sharp in my 412! |

Cant find any marking on the metal parts, only some date marking on the bottom plastic section, my original VW412 1973 steering wheel says "23 11 72" the super beetle one says "6? 11 73".
Also the super beetle steering wheel has the four Audi rings (OOOO) at the base at the big fitting nut, my original dont. Guess the Super beetle wheel is newer then the original one.
Anyhow they both seem to be identical when it comes to how they fit.

Thanks Lars for helping. At least we can confirm one thing - The 1973 SB steering wheel will work on the 411/412.
I'll try to do some research on other steering wheels as well. As mentioned earlier, I think the splines are different on the '73 SB. |

Will the SB fit a 71 411? I noticed there was no reference to the 71 411 which has a different 3 spoke steering wheel |

One thing interesting to note, is as I recall, the '74 412 did NOT get the steering wheel spline change other aircooled VWs got that model year, which I believe are the same as the early watercooled. I also think there are some Porsche steering wheels that will fit as well. _________________ '74 412 wagon
