|
|
I bought a tubular frame with a vw van engine and transmission. It has the van rear suspension and I assume 1975 to 1980. It had a 2.0 engine and 6rib trans. I'm really curious about the front torsion bar suspension. I thought it was bug. It has ball joints and the steering box is not centered like all van/buses I've seen. Any input would be great!!!
Thanks
Jeff

here are the pictures...
I was told it was a bus/van suspension, but don't think it is... it has ball joints but it looked like a kingpin front, I don't know much about VW torsion bars to begin with... any help would be awesome so I can figure out how to fix it. |

Its bus/van... Type 1 (beetle) has solid tube, not formed (stamped) and welded... Also shock towers are not "beetle"...

I'm confident you are looking at a type 3 (square back, fastback, notchback) front beam. There is no center anchor in the upper tube as it is a built in sway bar. The trailing arms look like type 3 and it has disc brakes. _________________

Yes it's a type 3 front end and yes you can adjust the ride height by just moving the arms on splined torsion bars.

could I swap out the type 3 beam for a type 1 beam? That way I can do air ride or buy one that's already welded in the adjustment bolts? I don't see much aftermarket for the type 3... unless I'm overlooking places.
thanks for all your help by the way in confirming this as type 3. |

You'll need to do some frame/framehead modification/changes to swap from Type 3 front beam you have to the Type 1 beam you want.
The T3 & T1 beams attach in vastly different manners to their respective pans...
T3 Beam & 'framehead' -
T1 beam & framehead -
