|
|
My 1982 Diesel Vanagon is on the lift to diagnose a shifter problem.
I'm having trouble finding 1st. When I wiggle the shifter I can hear a clanking sound about midway on the floor in the back. Checking underneath I suspect that the center shift bushing and the assorted parts that are at the tail end of the front shift rod have failed (see page 34.2 of the Bentley repair manual).
While I'm at it I intend to replace as many parts as are available to clear up some of the slop in the shifter.
I think I already know the answer to this question but, I just want to confirm; do I have to remove the fuel tank to R/R the center shift bushings and other parts?

It would certainly be far easier to remove the tank than to work around it... I won't say it's impossible to do without removing the tank, but it would be far more painful than the tank removal.
BTW, that bushing is NLA. You'll have to go custom. |

yes you do, some of the parts are no longer available, the center shift rod bushing being one of them.
as you need to have the shift rod out to change some of there parts, when i found that the center shift rod bushing is NLA, as a temporary fix made a bushing from the top of a water bottle, it got the van back on the road, i will modify to use the late type of bushing if when it fails, my customer does not want to replaced until it fails, so i guess we'll see how long it holds up _________________ lucy our westy

Center Shift Bushing for 80-83.5 Vanagon New! Price: 24.00
I have finally found a source for a part that has been bothering me ever since I started my business. The center shift bushing for the 80-83.5 Vanagon Aircooled and Diesel. This bushing has been NLA for over 13 years. Now I have brand new ones available at an affordable cost. If you have needed one for a long time, now you can breathe a sigh of relief. The part number is 251711207 and it is number 21 on the chart. I have most of the other bushings for these vans in stock as well as other hard to find shifter parts. Just drop me a line.
Here is a link to the diagram if you can't see it here:

I'm in the process of obtaining part numbers for as many shifter and shift rod wear items as possible. This will allow me to search for what I need. I will post my progress.
