I have mobile hotspot for no extra charge right from my Android phone. I have used this service in various places in the country.

We have 4 lines w/unlimited call, text, data for $100 total incl taxes etc. ($25 each line). They offer free or cheap phones or bring your own. Uses a SIM card.

Data has first 2GB 4GLTE then reg 4G or 3G - any of them good enough for email. My kids sometimes run out of 4GLTE but its enough for me.

Metro PCS is T-Mobile w/o the contract (I love no contract and cheaper price)

We have AT&T. I don't recall telling ATT that I was using my phone for tethering. I just noticed the option in the settings of my IPhone and tried it.

Depending where you travel Verizon service is way above att in more remote areas. A pay as you go Verizon dongle or mobile hotspot device would be a good solution except I an not sure they offer it. They will wholesale their 3g service to others that offer different plans but you have to go through them and pay a lot for their premium service. Best deal with them is a combined family plan and get several people to share a fair amount of data, but even their I think their base charge per phone is 60, then about 10 per gb when you share 8 or 10 gigs with a few others. Or just a tablet plan which the vase charge is only 10/mo. Plus however much data you want.

I don't have this, but we're looking for something like this for my daughter at
college, rather than $80/mo hardwired internet service in her new apartment.

BONUS that she could travel with it & we could use for road trips...???

A significant drawback to this device is it's only 4G. Like a lot of current tablet offerings, it cannot connect in more remote areas that only have 3G coverage. For me, I camp in harder to get coverage areas and backward compaitable coverage on Verizon is essential. Verizon phones are all backward compaitable, but you pay for it, usually around $100/mo and you can't do a pay as you go AFAIK. I have an AT&T phone and there is no comparison in remote coverage.

Maybe one of the other Jetpacks like their 6620 which is backward compatible can be used on the prepaid data card plans, but I am not sure. That wouild be great. But from what I found when I was looking is they do not discount their premium services. I looked and did not see any cheaper way than using an older 3G/4G tablet (or an Ipad mini) with a monthly data plan. A pay for occassional use would be nice, but IMO it has to work at all speeds.

And yes, the 3G for $20 is not for this device. 3 GB is $60, 10 GB for $90 good for 30 days. I believe you can do one refill per month.
