I just scored a very big piece of low pile/berber carpet that is the perfect mix of blue to match our van/interior!! VERY HAPPY!! I plan to trim it in myself, so I may not be professional/factory, but it will be neat and clean. Does the collective wisdom have any suggestions for 'binding' the rough carpet edges so it doesn't unravel or look messy?
Thanks! _________________ 1981 Westfalia with a 2001 Cabrio ABA

Its called surging if I remember correctly. Most carpet stores or upholstery shops should be able to do the job. |

That link looks like just the DIY edging I need. I can't imagine it wouldn't mold to the van...I plan to use double sided tape or something similar and cut it to fit snugly. _________________ 1981 Westfalia with a 2001 Cabrio ABA

Burber house seems to too stiff too me.A good auto type in front usually required a slit on both sides of the'hump'sect' to flatten out, a check a lot, cut once deal.once u get a fit u can use spots of silicone caulk to hold it down, dont get hard, vw used a black like stuff that can be re stuck back to orig spots. Most carpet sales have binder machines, per ft chg. |

A serger is kind of sewing machine that trims the edge of said object while sewing a finished edge of thread wrapped around the edge. Binding is a roll of vinyl or cloth an inch wide or so that gets folded over the edge and sewn in place. Either will work nicely. Both require an industrial machine for carpet.
Most carpet for automotive purpose has a thin backing making it easier to mold into place. You will likely have to take a few darts out of the carpet in places where you will have excess material. You could fairly easily hand sew them shut and then take it to an upholstery/carpet shop and have them edge it for cheap. |

I like the silicone caulk idea to hold it down...I want something that will hold, but also allow removal/replacement when time. I plan to cut the pieces to fit and cutting clean lines to allow it to match the contour is OK...i think the silicone and some weights while curing will help the carpet to hold in place properly. Hopefully plan to start in a week or so... _________________ 1981 Westfalia with a 2001 Cabrio ABA
