|

Today i installed a 356 generator pulley. I read a thread in vintage bus and the pulley is 10% smaller in diameter than a standard generator pulley.
My motor now has the CHT sensor under the #3 spark plug, and it went from 350 to 500 going uphill. It is running cooler and tomorrow morning I go for a high speed run to check it out.
I will be changing to a welded fan, when i replace the clutch and land nut
I have an external oil cooler and never see oil temps over 215.
I hope this is the final fix.
I am going to BugORama on Sunday, so can give a report after driving on I5 in 100 degree heat. _________________ 63 singlecab

Well I am so happy, this really seems to have fixed it.
I ran mostly at 350 degrees going up to a max of 400.
I am going to BugORama tomorrow and instead of camping I am spending the night with Cecil. So I drove 100 miles into the San Joachim valley, it was over 100 degrees F, and I kept up with the 70+ MPH traffic and went over the Altamont pass.
Apparently the hub and nut look like an old 36HP beetle engine, but I bought the package from Pelican parts at true Porsche prices. I had a problem getting the correct fan belt as the Porsche crank pulley is smaller that a 1600 VW pulley.
I was careful not to take my counterbalanced engine up to its redline of 6500 RPM, as I have a standard fan, I will get myself a balanced welded fan quickly, to install with my chrome-moly gland nut.

Hello Sam. I have been kicking this idea around for a couple of days, while doing my research.
How do you like this "upgrade"? Is it what you expected?
I have a mild 71 bus and I am in SoCal.
Ive bought a couple things from Pelican. Would you do this again?
Bill. |

The 1600 in the singlecab runs fine. I would buy from pelican available n, but would make sure they were Porsche only parts. _________________ 63 singlecab

i have not had good experiences with these "cast," replacement pulleys in VW applications.
very few of them have gone on to lead long lives.
how's yours holding out, sam?
the hub tends to wallow out, which could lead to all kinds of catastrophe if the engine is running when it lets loose.
been able to catch them all before this happened, thankfully.
highly recommend buying a used OG porsche set-up as they are stamped steel and much more durable. _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |
