if he has AAA+ RV (highly recommended) then Salt lake city is ~200mi and has a selection of VW knowledgeable repair shops.

Assuming he has a lady or other friend with him to turn the key, he can run through all the needed test to determine what is wrong in a less than an hour even if he has never done any such thing before, an experienced mechanic would have it done in just a few minutes.
He needs 12ish volts between the B+ terminal on the starter and the engine block when the key is turned to the start position, if he doesn't have 12v under those conditions he needs to figure out what is causing the voltage drop and fix it, no parts may be needed at all, just a few normal mechanics tools to remove, clean, and replace things.
Reading the voltage at the starter when the key is not turned to the start position (or there is no jumper from the B+ or #50 spade) is meaningless.
If he is driving a 25+ year old car and doesn't have a multimeter or doesn't know how to use it, he needs his butt kicked. |

Heck no, that's lifted dually pick-up truck territory. I'm surprised that hippie-bus drivin' weirdo hasn't had his ass kicked by a local yet. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

on the family 'fleet' we try to pull the starters every 2-3 years to inspect/ clean and R&R..
also many here advise to add an extra external ground cable from the starter bolt to the chassis.. always sound advice.
glad to hear he's on the road.. till next time anyways.. _________________

This is a good reason to go with the Bosch rebuilt starter.
They are 'designed' to automatically remind you to R&R them every few years. |

You a short distance from Flaming Gorge Reservoir from Rock Springs. That is a NRA and you can drive right up to the water and camp.
Maybe don't go right up to the water unless you are on firm ground. The pebbles faked me out. Lots of beach sand underneath.

You know, not to sound too oafish, but this should have taken (seriously) no more than about 30 minutes to nail down. Driving these old things is an adventure and a privilege, but demands a moderate level of ... awareness.
The trouble in this case (although the symptom was not described well) is very common and the advice given standard fare for any vehicle. A clear division in folks' minds needs to be made between the starting circuits and the ignition circuits. If you guys were truly thinking ignition coil for a motor that wasn't turning over, some mechanical review is probably in order. _________________ - 83.5 Westfalia - 2.2 GoWesty "power"

Unless if when saying "ignition coil" they meant to say "solenoid" which...er, proves your point. _________________ - Jim

I agree with desert. One of the most oft confused descriptions of engine problems is what the engine is doing or not doing when it will not start. It should almost be a sticky. Perhaps a step by step of what is supposed to happen:
1 - loud click from starter indicating solenoid works.
2 - starter engages the engine and starts rotating it (sound of rotating engine)
3 - fuel combustion happens (engine runs on its own)
It would have to have a few more items. But "engine won't turn over" means #2 is not happening to me. But to others it means #3 won't happen, and there is a world of diagnostic difference between the two. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

I have wondered if this is somewhat regional as so many seem to use the phrase to mean the engine will crank but not fire up and run. |

And a lot of that might be context. A given user might use "turn over" to mean a couple different things depending on the situation, when in the no-start troubleshooting process the requirement for clarity is critical. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

I wrote a post that was critical and snarky, for which I apologize.
Then I deleted it.
