Hi All,

I have searched but I can't find what i want so hence this post. I am putting a transmission back together on my 1966 Samba. Take a look at the pinion, its a little worn but not bad. Should I replace or not? Thanks for your help!

Well those are upper axle shovel handle ends.

Pinion is part of the ring and pinion in the center of the rear axle.

Probably need new or good used crown gears, definitely same for fulcrum plates and upper axles or have the shovel handles plated and ground back down.

Thanks for your help on this! I have never been this deep into my bus before. Any ideas of where to get new or used crown gears?

Do a search of the classifieds for "Gear" and that will pull up a few results in used.

http://www.scatvw.com/master/differentials/

https://weddleindustries.com/

and would try any transaxle rebuild shops.

Call Mike at Rancho http://ranchotransaxles.com/ and he can hook you up with good used parts (or new). Think I paid $50 for a pair of good axles.

I'd definitely replace the axles and fulcrums. Possibly gears, would need to see better.

If you wanted to be thrifty you could put it all back together but switch all the acceleration loaded surfaces to the exact opposite of what they were. Check to see if your side gears are cracked anywhere. This will buy you some more time.

Ditto, if you're this far in replace them.

Hi Guys,

We have the luxury of having Gary from Gary Transaxles up here in the Seattle area. http://garystransaxles.com/

I ended up buying good used axles, fulcrum plates, and crown gears from Gary. He also rebuilt my transmission. Great man.

Like you say, I have this ripped apart, I might as well replace everything with new stuff. reduction box bearings, seals, spacers, caps are all being replaced.

Love this forum...thanks for all the support.

Do worn axles and fulcrum plates make any particular kind of noise to indicate they are worn?

Yes, Gary is great.

Worn FP area gives a thunk when you step on the gas or let off the gas. The more worn it is, the more thunk. With a badly worn FP area I learned to be very gentle when stepping on the gas.

This is a common wear area for buses. For some reason the beetles don't seem to have the same issue.
