Hi,
I'm trying to remove the front driver side dust cap, but it won't come off. I understand that there is E-clip (circlip) for the speedometer cable, but it does not seem to be there. Please see picture below.

1. Is the E-clip there (or am I going crazy)? If so, how is it removed.
2. If the E-clip is not there, why isn't the dust cap coming off? It has play, but will not come off. I am use a motorcyle wheel tire changer which provides plenty of leverage on the dust cap lip when I bang on it.

Thanks guys...

John

The e-clip is not there, use a flat blade and wiggle under the lip of the cap. Make sure you go all the way around. All else fails use a rubber mallet at the end and tap all the way around. If it wiggles like you said it will eventually come off, just be patient Smile

Thanks buddy. I thought I was going crazy. I know what a circlip looks like and even have the pliers!

Thanks again!

I use a regular carpenter's hammer (claw hammer). If that fails, I use a claw bar--the kind for removing nails.

Awesome. Was wondering a really large channel lock plier would work better? This way I can grip in and turn it... Just a thought...

Using the claw hammer or the claw bar, you tap a little, letting the leverage do the work, then turn the wheel a little and tap some more, and repeat. This removes the cover in increments until it just pops off.

Get another "C-clip" from Ace Hardware. You need it.

You can also use a piece of pipe, or anything that is round, and slightly large then the gap, and drive it in between the drum and the cup. Go around the hub and do it in stages.

You can forget this thought. The crowbar for really stubborn ones, claw hammer 'claw' for ones that have been 'serviced' recently.

make sure you don't pull the guts out of the speedo cable. Tap the end of the cable through the hole as you go

As far as the e-clip I recently lost mine (my speedo started jumping all over).

I didn't have one so I did a search knowing there has to be an easy fix.. and there is! (VW guys are so inventive!)

Take an old copper washer from your oil plate, snip it in one place, put it in the groves and clamp it down with a pliers. Fixed. Smile

Hi Guys,
I knew this would work... I just used Harbor Freight Channel Lock pliers ($15). Cap comes off in 3 seconds.

Here is a video I made:

I've always used a carpenter claw hammer.

That just makes it too easy. How are we supposed to have any fun if we can't fight with it? Laughing
