This question is concerning the BLACK covers:
There are more than 1 style of pebbling/grain of Hartz brand material. One style has a finer pebbling which is not correct.
Which style is Matt using for his covers?
Can someone please post a close-up pic of their og seat cover and a new Matt Miller cover? |
My understanding is that there were atleast 2 different grains used over the years. What year range are you referring to? |
Was referring to 55-58 buses. _________________ WANTED:

The 59-61 gray solid back swivel seat covers are now available. If anyone has a 61-62 folding back swivel seat we can not make that style until we have a frame to go off of.
Also available are 1962 Only walk thru front seat covers.

Gray middle & rear seat covers for 1959-62 & 63-64 (with white piping) are available now too. I have middle seat covers in both short & full length sizes. _________________ Home of the one true split Bus Motorhome |

I'm working with a set of Matts covers at the moment.
Is there anyone out there with a set of 1/3 2/3 seats that can show me how the tie wires are routed and tied together?
I'm also keen to see how the trim works with the bar with the slot in it running across the bottom of the back of the 2/3 seat. I assume the trim sits in the slot but how is it held in there?
Thanks! _________________ 1965 ratty single cab

I watched Matt do the install of the cover on a swivel seat. I can tell you that he is very careful and does everything in a particular manner. His experience installing the covers makes things go easy, and I remember thinking how important it would be to have instructions when installing the covers at home. That rear bar with the slot holds onto the cover very well, and Matt carefully manipulates the cover into that slot.

I can answer this part as I have a photo:

The bottom slot here?
It has a little piece of cardboard that slips into the slot.
Tension keeps it in there since the cardboard cannot pull back out. _________________ How to Post Photos

Yep that's the one thanks Everett.
Red, yes a set of instructions would be handy! You dont happen to have any photos showing how he secured the tie wires by any chance?

The wires are tied to the spring frame, nothing special just keep them away from the material when attached. And don't use any heat guns!! _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. CB 044 heads, AutoCraft rockers, chromoly push rods

The backrest doesn't use any wire . It used the two strip of cardboard/plastic at the bottom, and the other three spots are held in place with 1/8" metal rods cut to length. Finally the edges are hand sewn.
The seat bottom uses wire to secure it, but it sounds like you got that figured out already.
FWIW I like to do the backrest first - with the lower springs removed. YRMV |

Instead of the metal rod? I think that is a bad idea. I'm sure the correct size rod 5mm rod is available from your local home improvement store. It's the same as a bus headliner too. |

I'm in the USA but I bought the headliner rods at my local hardware store. _________________ How to Post Photos

OK so I've been re-reading everyone's posts.
When you say the other three spots are held in with 1/8" rod, what exactly are these three spots?
Is anyone able to post a photo or two to assist here please?!
Cheers
Edit - I've managed to pull two seams doing a test fit…… On the back rest would anyone like to share where they started and finished? I.e I would assume that inserting the bottom flap into the rear bar is last but can anyone confirm that?
Thanks guys I'm sure its easy when you know how! An instruction sheet would be a very worthwhile addition to this kit. _________________ 1965 ratty single cab

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but If you can't answer your question by looking at the seat or by using the photos above, I think you really should consider handing this job off to a professional trimmer. |

With respect, the photo is not exactly a close up…..No doubt others will be wanting to do this themselves which is kind of what this board is about isn't it?
The old covers were completely trashed and you would have had to see the way it was secured to believe it so I don't have a reference point and haven't been able to find one online.
The kit does not have a cardboard strip sewn into the rear flap, it is simply folded on itself and sewn closed. Does anything sit in the slot behind the flap once it has been inserted?
I'm still trying to work out where the rod goes? I have three spikes on each side to pin the side flap and four across the top so all good there.
I appreciate the assistance _________________ 1965 ratty single cab

When I installed my seat covers I used zip ties to compress the springs a bit...made installation much easier... _________________ 1960 L31 M183 kombi |

OK so I got there in the end! Here's a few reference photos....
The cardboard strip that I failed to see initially!
Start at the top and work down
Hold on to both sides of the material and roll over the corner.
Got there in the end!
Still not sure what the rod is referred to above? My seats had flat metal spikes for pinning the material on the sides of the frame.
Cheers and thanks _________________ 1965 ratty single cab

Yes, the metal spikes are what secure the three metal rods on the 2/3 backrest. |

A while back I saw an ad for new metal upholstery spikes to weld to the seat frame to replace the broken ones. Does anyone know if they are still around? If not, any ideas what gauge metal they are? They look easy enough to make.
Thanks in advance. _________________ 62 original paint Turkis double cab
