|
|
I will update this as I go as this is a long term project. I bought this 65 about a month ago, it is supposed to be a original 69,000 mile car but I have my doubts. Either way it is a very solid, very unmolested 65. Drop spindles in the front, wheels and converted to 12 volt are the only minor things changed. Its by no means a show car but I cant get over how solid it is.
I pulled the front end out of it and ordered a Airkewld, -4" adjustable link pin front beam and a set of their stage 2 disc brakes, in the mean time I started blasting in preparation for painting all the suspension pieces. My goal is to build a very dependable driver. Once the front end is finished I will move to the rear for a set of disc and it lowered as well (more than likely a set of adjustable spring plates) For wheels im planning on stock 15" smoothies in the front and a set of 15 x 5.5 smoothies in the rear with a 145/165 combo. Since when i do repaint the car I think its going to remain creme colored, im not 100% sure on wheel color, I'm thinking creme as well or maybe a silverish grey color (maybe a little darker than a Chevy rally wheel) Im planning on a Rancho Pro Comp trans and a Chico 1776 Torque Monster. Along with a fresh wiring harness (this one is 50 years old and getting brittle) anda Altenator this should give me a very dependable fresh drivline. Then I will start on the interior/body with a pan off goal after retirement (I have 22 years in the Army so its not far off.) I want to keep the body interior stockish looking and certainly not a restoration just a very clean driver.

Making progress, received the front brakes, all the shanks on the studs are to long to use with a stock rim so I had to counterbore the lug nuts. Plans are to powder coat the rims a creme color
Spindles finished with new king pins and link pins
Trailing arms done, finished the bolts to add a little class.

Nice. Good looking car. I'd leave it the stock color, too damn many silver/gray cars out there already.
I love to see a clean workspace and parts. Makes the whole project a lot easier. |

The car is almost for sure going to stay its origional color I really like how neutral it is. The master cylinder is a twin circuit that comes with the instalation kit from Airkewld. |

Making a little progress, I got the wheels back and I think this about the stance I was trying to achieve, the rear end might go downa little lower.
And rear brakes on done
Im very anal about things like stacking washers as spacers (especaily on quality parts) so I made some quick spacers out of aluminum.
I should have the beam this week so I can start making some real progress and update photos as I go |

Very nice work. I like the fact that you made your own spacers. Rather than settling for the old "stacked" washer idea.
Keep the updates coming.

I got the front suspension in it, will take some better pics later on. I will do a very thorough review of the Airkewld Brakes, beam, spindles etc...as well

Great car to start with, looks extremely clean. I would lower the rear a little... |

I will probably lower the rear a little more, I wasn't sure where I wanted the front end to end up, I want it have some rake to it still. |

Making some more progress, I ordered a transmission and engine so out with the old, and I want to paint the engine compartment before the new goes back in.

my OCD compelled me to make my own shock bushings, they have a shoulder on them and makes the mount so much nicer.

Well just a couple updates, haven't done so much on it lately, I've been procrastinating since I don't have a engine or transmission yet. Got the engine compartment primed and hopefully painted in the next week and some more hardware finished and nickel and dime things powder coated.

Very nice build so far, That is one solid and clean '65. The car will end up being show quality with the way you are completing all of the work, are you sure you want this to be a daily driver? _________________ 1957 VW Oval Resto Mod |

The bolts are ARPs, most I have sourced from Summitt racing, I just put them on the lateh wil a Ball Nose in the tail stock and finish them to give some personality.
The car will for sure be a driver, I simply dont have the time or the money to make it a "show" car. I just wanted something clean and mechanicay nice so I can drive it and enjoy it. |

Fair enough, but make sure you insure the car with an agreed value. It looks like you will have more $$$ in the car than it's worth. Looking good! _________________ 1957 VW Oval Resto Mod |
