New hardware and bearings, everything else including crank, rods, cam, heads, pistons and cylinders are all used.
Not much of a rebuild in my book. _________________ Glenn

With an average hourly labor rate of $50-75 an hour that wouldn't leave you many hours to rebuild it after paying for the parts. I would be very leery of these. _________________ Mic

Rather than engage in a bunch of negative thought why not call ask how long they've been in business, references, possible training etc. rampant speculation is just spinning wheels. Ask the right questions and you'll have your answers. If they are a reasonable driving distance away a personal inspection will speak volumes as well. Good luck and don't assume everyone's out to fuck you over. As old Ronnie raygun used to say "trust but verify"😄 |

As a retired VW engine builder all I see is a list of cleaned up used parts and a long list of gskts that come in a gskt set....and nothing about the cyls.
Ad says a lot of nothing but GLITZ. |

I'm thinking you have to supply them with a pretty solid core to just need the journals and camshaft polished and pistons re-ringed. For a couple of hundred more you can get new pistons, for a couple of hundred more you can get a reground crank and rods, for a few hundred more new heads, for a couple of hundred more a new camshaft and lifters, etc., etc. and so it possibly builds in price from there. _________________ 1958 Karmann Ghia owner |

They're old school. I forget his name but he's been doing VWs in the old days out of that shop called VW Heaven when it was open in (I think) Ontario. They also have a shop in Encinitas. I spoke to the owner over the phone multiple times due to their local presence here in San Diego just to feel them out. Just for kicks, I was planning to drop an already machined 1600 single port motor with them for assembly in which they offer for $500 yr/warranty. I have no problem providing business to honest aircooled providers until they prove otherwise. |
