Personally, I'd try a GL-4 spec gear oil such as GM or Pennzoil synchromesh.
But if it's working well for you, run it.
And BTW, what's wrong with 1l jugs? _________________ 1991 Tintop GL Manual tranny, EJ22 |

So far, I like it. |
I would be more concerned over the tranmission's feelings about this fluid. |

whatever you do, be sure to ignore the specification from the engineers who designed the vehicle |

i was about to change oils and go with the Kendall NS-MP 80/90 Hypoid GL5. My 915 trans in a '78 SC shifts the absolute smoothest with that oil.
However I reached out to Kendall and asked them if I could use that GL5 in my Vanagon trans with bronze contents. This is the reply from Kendall:
Hello Paul,
Thank you for your email and using Kendall NS-MP 80W-90 gear oil. Unfortunately, the Kendall NS-MP 80W-90 is not the correct product for your VW. You are correct that GL-5 gear oils will attack yellow metals. GL-4 gear oils are typically used in applications that contain yellow metals such as brass or bronze i.e. manual transmissions. In the Kendall product line we currently do not offer a GL-4 gear oil. Please take a look at Red Line Synthetic GL-4 MTL 75W-80. The link is below. The MTL is a great product and should meet your needs. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Ah, yah I think I'm going to have to kind of disagree with you on that.
I don't really care actually, but after a thorough reading a little bit of scolding, I came to the conclusion that GL-5 are fine. The think the determining factor were the reputations of the people who were saying it and the small amount of material that could be affected and something about the size of something inside the transaxle. Anyway I listened for a while and from now on I'll put GL5 Extreme Pressure Synthetic oil in mine. Specifically Amsoil 75-90 EP Synthetic. Mail order only and roughly $15/quart. No biggy to me. I did first buy Amsoils GL-4 version but it does not have the same extreme pressure rating. I'll run that until the next change. |
