Was considering painting the vw sign on the hubcap, same color of the car but wondering if it s correct to do so ? And how?
Also wanted to paint the groove on the bumpers red , what do u think? How ?
My only worry if I do a mistake and ruin them! _________________ - Split De luxe 1950

Then just give it a shot.
If you are not pleased with the result the paint can be removed from the chrome quickly. _________________ Master of my domain! |

Here is my bumper and hubcaps. I scuffed up the chrome on both and primed and painted.

They may look two toned but they are all one color; the same color as the steering wheel, shifter, e-brake, seat frames, steering column. |

I have parts from a film from summer 1949, they have filmed the production and also the loading on the train waggons. In this film, you see both, standard and export models and there is definately no(!) paint in bumper grooves or VW logo on hubcaps. Also the semaphores were black at that time (even on cars with a light body colour tone), the rims of course one tone coloured, a lighter colour than body colour for brown and green cars, nancy did it alright.
In 1951, the semaphores got body coloured, the wheels where also availbale in two tone colour (on demand), the bumper grooves and the hubcaps logos got paint in body colour, at least here in Europe. I don't know, where the idea of the red bumper grooves came from, perhaps it was a special thing of several export countries.
But what is correct for 1950? The rims are still one-tone coloured, the semaphores are black, but where hubcaps logos and bumper grooves painted?
I don't believe it, because the painted details where together changed in 1951, the first models with crotch coolers... |

So ghia, your wheels should look like nancy's if you want to have it correct.
I know, the temptation is big to do them two tone coloured... |

The bumper that came on my car had the red paint. The bolts holding it on were original, and while the rest of the chrome was pretty pitted, under the red and between the brackets and bumper the chrome was like new.
Maybe the factory did not put on the red, but someone very early on sure did. |

Yes, I believe it. There are also splits in Europe with a red painted groove, especially in belgium. Perhaps it was a prescription like mounting rear red reflex reflectors in addition... but I'm shure, the factory did not paint them. Perhaps it was a job for the dealer? I have read anywhere that there were dealer painting the black semaphores in body colour? |
