good point on the paint, i will have to check fit and make adjustments as I go along.

That was the final version of the old VW Revell bug kit, molded in white plastic.

At this point the tooling was getting old, there was lots of flash and some of the sharp details of the smaller parts was lost. Plus it still had those fender flares, so unless you intended to build a '70s custom, they needed to be sanded off.

Nevertheless, this makes a great parts donor for one of the earlier kits, especially the Herbie.

I don't know if this has been asked or not but,

I need to know if there is any glue that works well with plastic models that sets up really fast. Been out of model building for quite a while and I'm not sure whats out there.
My 2 grandsons, ages 9 and 7 want me to help them get started with model building, but they lose interest pretty fast when it takes so long to glue things together. They are use to Lego-style building, no glue, snap together stuff. And the snap together models are pretty limited on choice.
I've tried Krazy glue and Loctite instant gel, but it just doesn't want to stick very well and regular Testors, black bottle with the pin style applicator just takes to long for them.

Any suggestions?

I have the same problem: Gradchildren who have been brought up on video games and have a short attention span. But you can't rush model building because the kids are impatient. Instant bond can lead to instant catastrophe if the parts aren't aligned perfectly. Plus instant bond adhesives tend to be harsh, and can ruin clear parts.

I'd either go back to using traditional Testor's Cement for Plastic Models or go back to Legos. (Also, I suggest using Micro Scale Krystal Kleer for cementing windows and trim items.)

I use a lot of CA(super glue) for my models, but I've learned to keep it away from plated or clear parts because it can fog the finish on them. Like Blue Baron, I'm a fan of Micro Krystal Kleer for windows and headlight lenses; it is also great for making gauge cluster lenses.

For structural gluing like chassis and major body modifications, I like 5-minute epoxy

OK, I have been going overboard with resin casting parts the last couple of months. I had not done any in decades, so it was good to get back to it. I made some silicone molds and started casting engine parts.
L to R
Testors Porsche 356 Carrera 4 cam engine
Polar Lights bug 36hp engine
Revell VW Street Machine engine

I really like that the Polar Lights bug has the heater box sleds, it is a nice detail missing from all the other engines I have seen.

I have wanted to build a split window bug in 1:24 scale, but I have never seen 1. I finally found the Mr. Hobby Oval window bug, got it from Japan, I cannot find it here.

I added the split window center section, then made a silicone mold of the back of the car, then a resin casting of that, then started cutting the back out of the Revell VW Street Machine. Should be cool. I have not decided on color yet.

Just bought and modded this today

Lowered it, put smaller tires up front, added nerf bars, and started to add some patina to it. Do you guys have any tips for doing the patina?

I recognize those Revell nerf bars. They look right at home on that 1/18 split.

I just finished this, started life as a Revel bug model, took a Mr Hobby oval window bug, modified it for split window, made a resin casting of the back of the car, graphed it into the Revel, took a canvas sunroof from a polar lights herbie model, resin cast that, put it on top, resin cast a testors porsche 356 carrera 4 cam engine, put that in back, the added a porsche 356 dashboard, modified the front seats from late high backs to early low backs, trimmed the fenders, removed the chrome trim, , converted front windows to 1 piece window glass, porsche rims, custom blended blue paint with pearl, done with airbrush.the background is autumn country road.

I have discovered that my hands are not as steady, and my eyes not as keen as they were 35 years ago! so I am a little disappointed in myself, but overall pleased with how it turned out. The blue looks much better in the sunlight, makes the pearl pop

Yes, it's the Tamiya '66. Very nice kit and with just a few mods to the engine -- thinned out the fan belt, added wiring, vacuum hoses, oil vapor hose, cardboard or the firewall, etc -- ended up looking pretty nice.

I'd like to build the Ghia sometime.

my latest, Polar Lights Spiderman Beetle - I like the opening hood and decklid, very cool. I resin cast an engine with custom headers and resin cast the cloth sunroof, added Revell nurf bars in black, shot in red Createx spray paint. I did glue it together since I do not trust snap tight construction.

yeah, the kit comes with 4 sets or rims, steel smoothies with either vw or smooth hub caps, Fuchs style or the BRM. I had never seen the BRM in a kit, so I went with that. maybe the best reason to get this kit!
