Just wondering if there was a good reason most gassers ran without running boards apart from small weight saving.Seems to me they could be made of lighter materials e.g. fibreglass, stainless stee,l even aluminium and still add some strength/rigidity.

Hi it all started when some one built a drag bug .and took off the running boards .one could say the inch pincher one drag bug .was the first to run no running boards so every one started to build there drag bugs with out running boards. Because they wanted there bugs to look like the inch pincher one .(I am sure there were other bugs that did it befor the inch pincher one but the inch pincher one got into a lot of car mags ) I have seen some race cars runing running boards . We did it to are race car in 1969 because it was a part of the car that was not needed and it looked cool with out the running boards lol spencerfvee

I think most racers of any brand took off anything that was superfluous, not needed, and could easily come off during a hard launch or catching 100+mph wind at the top end. Also, every pound counts. I'm running square aluminum tubing in place of the running boards, just to give it a little more of a finished appearance.

Well, yes, it's kinda done...at least done enough to be on the road and driving. I still have a few things to do to hit the track - mostly safety stuff and such.
I have just a slightly warmed-over 1600 that I use for putting around on the street for now. The 2180 is getting freshened, some new linkage fabbed up for the dual Holley Bugsprays, and saving up for 930 CVs. It's all just little stuff that is on the back burner, both time-wise and financially right now.
My main goal this year wasn't to hit the track and be competitive, it was to get it on the street and have fun with it, maybe hit up a few shows. I still have a buggy I want to finish, as well as 2 other non-VWs that are waiting to get done.
Anyway, I'm gonna have more current pics in a bit. Since this pic, I have the lights installed, a new set of Race-Trim slotted aluminum wheels, and yellow tinted windows.

hi great to see you got it on the road . I am very happy for you I bet it turns a lot of heads on the street . are first drag car had a pair of holley bug sprays carbs on it it ran high 14s 1/4 mile . I know one thing bug spray carbs don't like a lot of fuel presser . about 1 1/2 lbs is what they like would like to see your big motor when its done I am building a 1915 for my drag car . good luck thanks for posting your update . I wish more guys would post photos of there drag cars new or vintage spencerfvee
