In the mid 1970s, I took a couple of photos of a 1947 Split Window VW.
It was located in the back lot of Truman Motors VW, El Cajon, CA.
I always wondered what ever happen to this 1947 VW

Note the holes in the pass side front fender where the mirror is mounted in the earlier photo. Holes in drivers side front fender for mirror mount as well. Same dent in lower front left fender. Must be the same car. |

Does the dusty fingermarks in the 1970's photo read "1946" ? _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Interesting to see this car. The US plates are there alright, but the car seems to have had a Coventry, UK registration before that. On the rear bumper is NKV 347, a pre 1960 number, in the usual UK plate size, and on the front can be seen the original plate behind the US number plate, but without the numbers & figures. Shame that metalwork can't talk! |

That is buster the 47 split bug. I got it about 15 years ago from a guy named walt in Romina california along with a 50 ragtop and a 52 crotch cooler rag top . The 47 is my pride and joy. I am amazed and astounded to see buster looking just like walt had described when he bought it for 1500 bucks..he had told me the story and this confirms it completely. Walt is a great guy and was a vw nut. When I met him I think he had 12 splits and nobody knew it.
Anyways thanks for posting these..made my day!!!!
Would love to borrow those actual pictures to copy and make intimate posters. Either pictures or negatives.
Please please I beg you. I will return them to you I give you my word.. _________________ do it right the first time or you are just wasting time and money |

Hey John, yup "Split Window" Walt had that car in the late 90s. He still resides in San Diego County, but is out of the VW scene
He's a shot of Walt (far Right) after Randee got his '49 back in '03

A '50 sedan previously owned by Walt was recently purchased and is now undergoing a full restoration in Spring Valley by another friend of mine |

So, what's the purpose of the grill on the front? I've never seen that before. Was that normal for a '47? _________________ --Brian ('74 standard bug)

Wow this is a great car. That hood mod looks very professionally done. It reminds me of the grille on some of the Rometsch cars, Goliath in particular. Odd headlights too. Could this work have been done by them in preparation of it's extreme service needs? I might think twice about undoing this part of the remarkable history of this unique car.
I question the claim on the other thread about this car having some damage to the drip rail on the roof being caused by contact with a tree. Pictures on this thread and the other one, show damage that is consistent with a quarter roll over, with some damage to the rear and front fender as well as the roofline.
Anyways, congratulations on moving this car forward. Keep us posted! _________________ Jack Staggs

The headlights are not '40 Ford. However, they do look like an aftermarket sealed beam upgrade kit for '39 Fords with the inverted teardrop lenses. _________________ Thanks,

Very interesting pictures.
Buster was imported into the UK in Mid-1956, presumably from Germany. Don't know when it left these shores to head over to the US. _________________ 1947 Beetle

Sorry I did not see anyone had been looking at this post.
For about 15 years now I have been storing and collecting parts for buster. Randee is a very good friend of mine and will be forever I imagine. I tried to get ahold of walt and share these pictures. But walt is very very old school cool and cell phone are about his maximum speed. Text and pics almost blow his mind I think. His phone is disconnected as of now. He might have gone underground again or needed the 40 for animal food as he only does rescues. He can live without food or water or house or just about anything as long as his animals are ok and fed.
The car is in my barn locked up. It will be getting disassembled piece bye piece and sent over to lloyd jackson at deluxe resto shop in uk to be restored. Yes I know there are people stateside that could do a ok to good job but I have found the man for the job.
I could do it all myself but can't hardly finish a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without my a.d.d kicking my ass sometimes. This way I trade a super cool car I have (21w) and cash for a high end resto that will get done and be so oh my god well done it's worth it.
I can send pics of it under lock and key but until the end of the month I'm not taking it apart yet.
Yes the front hood was supposedly done fir air to flow into cabin due to heat in it journey and eork in south Africa and yes its very well done. I'm torn to leave it alone or remove it. Maybe have two hoods.. i don't know yet.. _________________ do it right the first time or you are just wasting time and money |

Go with the 2 Hoods. That way you can Accessorize.
That front Bonnet is way too cool to leave behind, but I can understand how you would like to roll without it. _________________ 1960 Convertible |
