The project is a GMH Holden VP. if you don't know what that is, its just an aussie Opel omega. pretty much the same chassis.
Bilstein certainly would of not made run of the mill shockers for these car. Monroe is the only thing these car stock with.
Not looking at a radical race setup, well sort of but given how well the stock shocks work already, I just want a mere improvement on them.
the problem is as you said, the monroe are way different from the monroe 20-25 years ago. For the worst from what I gather.
If the boge shocks can exceed the OG factory fitted monroe I would be pretty happy.
I would say most of the improvement on these cars can be done with caster increase and running 28-30mm sway bars as the 26mm is way too thin and the car squats down into corners too much in stock form. And most importantly use of Fulcrum (aka superpro) poly bushes.
I haven't really played with shockers much on them so I am guided by others opinions on what brands of shockers are good really. |

From my experience with Monroe shocks made in the 1970's....they were some of the highest quality aftermarket out there. They were made of very high quality materials and lasted longer than most OEM. But....their technology or configuration was not any more advanced than anything else at the time. So....finding NOS....which would probably be shot.....would do little.
However...any Monroe's you buy now would have much upgraded internals. I would doubt that Monroe would be keeping really old technology manufacturing around. As long as the valving is correct I would not hesitate to use a set of Monroe's. Good basic shock.
Both the Bilstein and the Monroe basics feature the patented, progressive pressure metering grooves.
Interesting Car! Ray |

Thanks for the info. A small car spring manufacture I know suggested the monroe GT gas as they are good value, perform well and he recons there is no issues with them. He said he likes Koni the best for their very high level of R & D.
I think he said boge were alright when I asked, will have to ask again.
I might get monroe GT. oh he said to stay away from the monroe stock replacements as they are cheap nasty rebadge now and are really a poor shocker, at least in oz they are.
if he said that , then that might explain the word on the street that monroe's aren't good.
Had an argument with this valiant guy over KYB vs monroe. I don't think I ever heard or seen anything good of KYB lol but he seemed to thing they were way better than monroe. maybe because he sold them at his work
the good thing is if I get the monroe as least my NOS struts which have monroe stamped on it with actually match whats in it. |

If you want to risk snapping off the mounting points, they're great- same with coil overs. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Can I put the bilsteins on my car if it is lowered. I'm not really sure how many splines on front and rear but probably about 3. I have a 73 squareback by the way. Here are some pictures for reference on ride highth (if possible I would like to go lower by one more spline in the back and smaller tires in the front)

You can but its a rough ride. I had bilsteins on mine and I was only half as low as yours. It handled great around corners but the shocks were so stiff and compressed that it made for a hard ride. _________________ 1968 FI Squareback |

I found this resource for Baywindow Kombi's but I think the information is still quite relevant and worth reading for Type 3 aficionados.

I am really confused as I see a lot of shocks on the market have both
OEM number 113513031N and the OEM number 311513031K
Is the same rear shock ok for bugs and Typ3`s as well?
I want the shocks for my squareback
I also found two different shocks form Sachs for the same OEM number
Sachs 195440 and Sachs 170546
What is the difference between them, and which one would be better for my car?
Please help
Thanks |

Any recommendations for shocks, running drop spindles and 1 click down with 185 tires in front. Koni's are a little to pricey. Would Blistein's work. Going thru posts Blisteins might be a little stiff, not sure a lot of people love them. Saw some good posts about running stock oil filled in front and Blisteins in rear. Not sure if stock oil filled will fit my setup.

You can use stock oil filled shocks up to 3 clicks down. When you go 4 clicks down or more, you need short shocks.
My 65 Notch is 2 splines down, with OE shocks on it. No issues either, but I'm also running 195-60-15's on the front. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

This may be a silly question, but are the front and rear shocks the same? i.e. will i be buying 4 of the same shock? _________________ Ein VW Muss Man Haben!!

The low pressure shocks like KYB GR2's and Boge's etc. list the same p/n F&R. But if you want a high pressure shock like KYB Gas-a-just or Bilsteins they list different p/ns for F&R. They are a more performance tuned shock system (well the Bilsteins are anyway ). _________________ Regards,

lots of posts on this are very old (2003). So, looking for most current suggestion for front shocks on my 69 fasty. I just lowered in two outer splines. so, appears I can run with stock shocks. But, without spending hundreds of dollars, what is a good shock for the front?

I put plain Monroe-Matic shocks all the way around on mine. I've been pleased with them. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Me too and its ~$100 for all 4 which is close to what one Koni shock costs. _________________ Laverne, our Squareback project:

Anything oil-filled. I had Cofap shocks on my last Square, and they were much smoother riding than my friend's Square with KYB gas shocks. I put Sachs Super Touring on my current car, but haven't driven it yet, so I can't report on their ride quality. |
