Not just insulation. They block air from the engine bay from going into the cabin. That channel goes straight into cabin. Starting in 65 or 66(someone correct me if wrong), they began spraying foam insulation in that channel. |

Clean around it ...there is a little controversary on this website as to where VW used Asbestos in their cars....
Type the word "asbestos " into the search and join in the discussion ; or just be careful around ANY 50 year old fire/heat insulation .
YES I AM one of " those people who worked with it " and would rather have you err on the side of caution ........ _________________ 63 two fold rag

The only asbestos I've seen VW confirm is noted in this service manual:
Note is at top right, and refers to the middle photo in the right side.
"Check the asbestos seal in the cover plate and in the manifold pre-heater pipe sealing plate." In other words, the seals in the tin surrounding the manifold pre-heat pipe (heat riser).
They were fibrous, white pieces about 1/8" thick, sort of half-round (split) so they sealed around the small pipe. Easy to knock fibers loose when messing with them. |

Those are also referred to as "pillows".
Yes, you need to keep them. You can pull them to work, but absolutely replace them. If you don't, you will suck exhaust gas into the car. _________________ Plate of shrimp |

Asbestos was used by the VW factory in brake linings, clutch, engine, and engine/exhaust gaskets.
Asbestos is no bueno, make sure to be properly protected when working on the above components
Personally I use a dust mouth/nose cover which is suitable for working near asbestos containing material, and I spray everything wet with water or WD40 before I start working on the parts.
I would be surprised if there is any asbestos in those pillows, considering that the tar board insulation in the engine bay already reflects most of the engine's heat, so the area where the pillows sit are not getting way hot.
Not sure what of exact material thoes pillows are made of though. _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank

Im just going to work around them. I was going to pull them and not run the tar board. I have ordered new tar boards to cover the bags. |

Mine are the original. They were seat fabric with a dense batting inside. I don't know what the batting was made of. I think there is a thread to two about them that had some likely candidates named. Also, some cool pictures of huge containers of the pillows on the VW assembly line. _________________ Plate of shrimp |

Wolfsburg West has those white pre-heat tube gaskets. They aren't very expensive. I replaced both of mine.

I heard the quality of those repros (footballs) is pretty good, but I might be biased |
