Im sending this out to everyone who was on this thread at some point. feel free to pass it around. see you soon!

Quote:
Hello! You at some point expressed interest in joining me on the backroads bus trip! It will be happening next week, if you can make it, please let me know! My phone number is (206) 841 – 7324 and my name is stuart!

Here are the perts:

Starting in oroville wa on sunday the 2nd of august! Will be meeting in the evening in town at:
Hornet's nest
1117 us-97
Oroville, washington

From there the group who shows up will asses where to camp for the night, leaving in the morning on monday the 3rd. We will attepmt to leave town by 10 am at the latest, if you require a bit longer to be able to get to town before we leave, please let me know asap!

We will then be taking the best open and avalible dirt route to get down to ellensburg by thursday. I am leaving this open because of the small number of participants on the first section, and also due to possible fires in the area i cant account for right now. It will be an adventure!

On wednesday we will be in elensburg! Camping will be just south of town at the campground about 20 minutes out of town. Camping will be about 10 or 15 bucks a night, or we can hit the road and camp on the mountain instead. Refuel and supplies happen in ellensburg and then we will wait for anyone wishing to do section 2 before leaving town. We will be leaving ellensbuerg on thursday, unless someone wishes to join and cant until evening, at which point we will leave on friday morning. Please message or call me if you need to leave later.

The goal is to be in portland by monday, where we will have an end of the road party at (71whitewesty, xevin, or someone in portland) house.

Bring a tow rope, a cb radio, and a gas can. Lets go have some fun!

Stuart

I have a paid camp site south of Ellensburg if someone wants it...I believe it will hold like two or three vans.
I don't know how to transfer it to someone else but, if some one is interested in it, I will look it up.

Hit me up if u want it?

Looks like it'll be just me for the first half from the border south, meeting up with newfisher, kwilf, and xevin in Ellensburg Thursday or friday. Had a buddy who just did the entire thing on a motorcycle who has a bus say it was pretty easy To pass even with fires nearby. Guess I'll be the new brian peircy. Smile

Well, I certainly can`t speak for anybody else, but the reasons I backed out are:
* According to GEOMAC.gov: There is a huge fire at/near the starting point--@ Newby Lake-Long Draw, that is at 0% contained!
* Also according to GEOMAC, there is a small fire just west of MT. Adams---currently, too remote to get fire crews in there--could be big by the time you get there in a week.
* There is a extreme fire danger for ALL back country travel---USFS & BLM recommends not venturing into back country during this heat emergency.

A guy I know upon hearing we were doing the WABDR in VW Busses comments:
* Umtanum Ridge to Wenas--serious ruts and washouts--says large 4X4 rigs had trouble, and some almost rolled their rigs. His (expert) opinion is that VW Bussed would be in serious trouble here.
* Bethel Ridge (Northwest of Rimrock Lake): lots of downed trees causing many tricky/dangerous switchbacks.
This information is accurate to about a month ago--he says that unless a repair crew has been to these places within the last few weeks, that these conditions would still be in effect. It`s great that Stuart`s friend had no problems, but keep in mind, he did it on a motorcycle--a Bus obviously would be a whole different matter.
Dugfresh and I are thinking about an alternate trip to Hart`s Pass/Slate Peak and Chelan Butte on the first weekend in October. If any of you are interested in this trip, we can further discuss. And/or a crossing of Colocum Pass from Wenatchee to Ellensburg. All of these would of course, happen when the fire danger wasn`t so extreme.

You guys be careful out there Sad

Lynn

Ia m not promoting unsafe traveling, flame jumping or rolling vanagons, but these guys just did it a coupke weeks ago. I believe from Ellensburg south. The northern route may have more complications at this time and from what I read, there are bypasses available for the tough stuff. Im still going, safe, slow and can always turn around.

So.. with much sadness I have to bail. Still having some driveline issues that are making me loose my mind and my work schedule is not lining up ...totally sucks because we were looking forward to this for several months...
The Hearts Pass gig sounds like a decent trip and we'd like to tag along on that if it happens...

Enjoy the ride fellas!

A lot of them PMD me with various reasons, all valid. No hard feelings toward anyone, promise! Brian Piercy did Shasta the first year in the snow and cold by himself and survived....I figure I'm doing it in summer when I have a huge fire risk as a vw already, in a fire engulfed countryside...should be enough to qualify as a honeybadger, right? Wink basically the exact opposite conditions. Not even sure I'll take any spare parts I'm so wreckless.... Hoping to make it annual anyways, so should be a fun first trip Wink

Lynn, yes there is a hazard. A bus is safe in the garage, but that's not what it was built for. Wink

Hope to see you all next year, and those of you making the second half, I can't wait to swap stories with you round the forest fires. Er, I mean camp fires....Laughing

If your making it to the Ellensburg-pdx section, and your name isn't kim Jon or kevin, please text me and let me know ASAP. 2068417324. Don't want to leave without you Wink

It's on!
Stuart was by this afternoon on his way to the starting point, swapped out an angry spark plug and had a little visit and he was on his way, good luck!

Thanks for posting those.

But please go back in there and hit the edit button so you can hit the enter key after each [/img] so they load vertically, too much sideways scrolling for me and it makes the whole page wide. Wink
