I am just curious about using a bus chassis instead of using a bug pan for a buggy. Can it be done and are there any pros and cons? _________________ Save a tree eat a beaver |

Does a Bus even have a separate pan? I was looking at pictures and it doesn't even seem close. |

Yes, with enough time and money you can build anything. Back in the 70s they built an airplane out of a Ford Pinto. It actually flew but it was terrible and crashed and killed the designer
Most of the structural strength in a bus is in the body. You could probably cut off all the bodywork and weld on additional reinforcements but it wouldn't fit any existing fiberglass body, the controls would all be in the wrong place and since the Bus suspension is designed for a heavy van, it would drive like a truck. Actually a Pinto would probably make a better chassis for a buggy than a VW bus

I have seen a bus chassis used by cutting off the entire top from the floor up and adding a full cage. But as mentioned no bodies available to fit.
not mine

Bus doesn't have a chassis it is a Monique so any removal of material will need to be done with a gas axe and grinder
Most of the mods I have seen done revolve around cutting it off at floor level and putting roll cages on the existing floor pan.
The Bus is heavy and I see little benefit to doing it unless you want the load capacity / room over a Type 1 base. |

If you think that this has never been done, you didn't ask glassbuggy . The late 60's were a strange place!

you would be better starting with a Thing or Karman ghia chassis for a buggy. Same wheelbase and physical size as a type 1, but 10" wider in the seating area.
