I have yet to work on a car with it, but probably will soon. Just talked to a buddy who knows engine management systems and does a lot of work on tuners, but has extensive vintage VW experience. Told me not to even try.....

Can you point me to a resource or good link(s) that will walk me through it so I can make up my own mind on whether this is something that I want to tackle?

Thanks in advance.

It's a lovely, simple, durable, classic EFI system: open a textbook to explain the basics/architecture of EFI compared to carbies and the Bosch system used on Beetles is 'it'.

I've run a couple down here in Australia.. where the system was seen in Volvo, BMW and some GM and Ford product in the 1980s

The biggest problem you will face - initially - is the fact that no mech-tech under 50 years of age will have trained on this now-old system.

But it's as simple as drawing with crayons

I have to agree... I'm mechanically inclined and I had a couple issues with my FI system and they were easy to diagnose and easy to fix.

Some repair parts are getting harder to source on the FI systems.

Depends on the parts in question. And whether you want good new parts, or semi-functioning old parts.

It depends where you look, VW wasn't the only manufacturer to use Bosch L-jet, many parts interchange with Nissan, Isuzu, etc...

When I was younger my parents had an '89 Toyota 4Runner which used a licensed version of L-Jet. You could see that telltale AFM when you popped the hood.

i created an all-things-AFC topic in the bus forum.
it was a sticky for a while.
now it is not, and generally neglected.
