'89 Westy AT

Boulder, CO to Fairbanks, AK

9,000+ miles

Only problem was blown out upper ball joint in Yukon. No acute cause, but maybe from some rough gravel / dirt roads.

Moncton New Brunswick in Canada to the Montauk light house on Long Island New York and back, 1500 miles including driving around for the week we were in the area. Some timing and mixture tweaking after it started to run rough on the island, everything came back nice and super driveable. Not sure what happened; bad gas, lower octane or water in the engine, wear maybe? Very nice trip overall, the van was very popular over there, we got a lot of attention Smile

OK - this was back in May, but went from Atlanta to Los Angeles and back. 6000 miles over 20 days.

83.5 Westy Wasserboxer. BOB has a GoWesty rebuilt engine and transaxle, both with fairly low mileage, and recently replaced rear axles and CV joints.

No issues except with the exhaust hanger system. I had (poorly) jury-rigged a hanger system for a GW SS 2.1L exhaust and that only made it to Alabama. Coat hangers got us through the trip and I have since re-engineered a better solution.

I changed or replaced everything that was questionable before the trip and carried a lot of spares; almost to the point of "sparanoia". We stayed off the interstate highways when we could and had a great time. No issues with any grades (other than slowness), but the strong winds out west kicked us around a lot. I did lose the odometer twice; once on the way out and once on the way back. I pushed the gear back in place to get it working on the road and finally did "the fix" once we got home. (The 6K miles is a very close approximation, but not exact)

Posted a couple of pics under the "what did your van do today" thread a while back. GA > AL > MS > LA > TX > NM > AZ > CA > NV > AZ > NM > TX > LA > MS > AL > GA

Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, England... 1600 miles in two weeks... I had to replace that burny liquid that goes in the big plastic tank a few times.

Just finished ~5500 miles in an '87 auto over 3 weeks. OR, ID, WY, SD, MN, WI, IA, NE, CO, UT, NV, CA, OR.

Had to replace the AFM in Idaho (already suspect, had a spare) and keep the fluids in check. Good trip!

1989 Westy camper 2.1 wbx
2 weeks for 2500 miles - Saint Paul,MN > Washington D.C > Philadelphia, PA > Saint Paul, MN
Exhaust started leaking at the manifold (expected it due to how I had to replace muffler before trip)
Inspection cap fell off the new pipe leading to the catalytic converter somewhere in Chicago.
Between 15-18 mpg with AC running and traveling at 65-70 mph.

A trip from Seattle to Denver in a '90GL.

A seven day trip of 3,000 miles - I-90 across WA, ID & MT dropping down all the way through WY to Denver. ZERO problems in 80+ degree weather.

Two day run back to Seattle with a one day blitz through WY to see Rushmore, Sturgis, SD, Devil's Tower and Custer Battlefield. 90 degree weather with ZERO problems. The stock motor ran like a champ. The radiator fan never kicked on the entire trip.

One word of warning - The slowest gas pump in the world can be found in Torrington, WY. 10 minutes to pump 7 gallons!

Here's a picture on the way back in hwy 26 near Lind, WA Still 4 hours from home.

7,800 miles. Lost a wheel bearing about half way through in Idaho. Hell of a time fixing that but other than that zero issues! (changed oil and shook out air filter along the way)

85 DOKA
1.9l
18-21mpg along the way
Miles on truck and engine a bit ambiguous but expected as low...

3200 miles, TX, NM, UT, WY, CO, OK, 53,000 feet of elevation gained and lost, through five major mountain passes in the rockies. Highest road elevation was 12,000+ feet. Two weeks, three men, full Westy with full water tank, house batteries, backcountry gear, and all our food/beer for the entire trip.

We were using the Westy as a rolling basecamp for climbing the high peaks of NM, UT, OK, and Longs Peak in CO.

No real problems. Plenty of AC running, plenty of rain, plenty of hot and cold temps.

We paid for camping only one night--all others were on Forest Service roads.

5,000 trouble free miles. 2.5 weeks

Albuquerque>Chicago>Detroit>Toronto>Cleveland>Chattanooga>Nashville>Dallas>Albuquerque

Lots of drag because of rooftop stuff and 500 lb motorcycle on the hitch rack made +75mph a gas hog. It is nice to be able trade mpg for time sometimes and possible with a subi 2.5

Redwood City,CA to Sheridan, Or. 1300 mi driving my Subaru Powered Syncro . Average MPG was about 17.5 MPG. Towed a small trailer up and just the van home.
While off roading we noticed that the fan was not coming on and the gauge was inching up. Turned out to be a dirty connection from the back of the fuse box. The fairly large Red wire with the Yellow connector was slightly corroded. In the process of figuring it out I destroyed the large 70A relay for the high speed fan which was stuck/corroded in its holder.
Other than that my newly repaired Cruise was a welcome addition.
