The new bushing (brass part) will not fit over my shift rod, so I have to use the old brass bushing, and the new blue oil seal
So I put the old seal on top of the new one to punch out the old seal from the old bushing.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

After some tapping with a screwdriver, the seal is out of the bushing.

I install the new seal in the old bushing and punch the edges to keep it in

Installed on transmission

Looked at the picture above and thought trans fluid may leak past the outside edge of the seal since it was not a tight fit.

So I unbolted the tranny, took the bushing back out and added JB-Weld epoxy to the outside perimeter of the seal.

Greetings, spent last 2 days reading this thread front to end. Thank you for all your hard work and sharing. It was very informative, I learned a lot of useful tips. Where did you get therear brake drum torq-mister tool? That would be very useful on the road. Last 2 days here in MN way too cold to even bother firing the wood stove in garage, I read all your posts instead. Eskimo Tom.

I guess winter will allow everyone to catch up on many threads, ha ha.

I got the tool from a VW show, but they are for sale everywhere from CIP to Amazon.

The bus has been very well behaved. Reliability has been very good.
I leave it for a month and then start it right up, drive to a show and drive back home and it just sits there. I had to give it a jumpstart once because I had not driven in a while.

I need to put back the Pertronix electronic ignition that I removed.
It starts easily when cold, but definitely has to crank more when warm.
I have to look into that eventually.

The upper half that is white will need some attention to prevent the rust from taking over, drip rails and the center of the windshield.

Thanks for the feedback!!!

I just went thru your thread here. Great job and patience on your part to continue to go thru all the repairs you've done, some multiple times.

Two other compelling observations from going thru this thread.

1) The quality of aftermarket parts like the fan shrouds, tins, seal kits, etc are shown in all their poor quality glory here. I think this is why there's such a vibrant classifieds on The Samba for used, original, German parts.

2) The alterations made while lowering and going away from stock have many challenges. I remember back in the early 80's when I was driving my cal-look, lowered, big engined, dual carb bug. It seemed like I was also "fixing" something as a result of the alterations from stock. Suspension issues, motor issues, etc.. I was young then and still tired from the constant repairs I was having to do.

Now, decades later, I find myself with bone stock, original VW's. It shocking the difference in how much less work and fuss you have on a stock VW, vs. custom VW. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy looking at custom VW's too, I just prefer the less maintenance of stock VW's. I guess the old expression "I'm too old for this shit" applies to me now. Very Happy

Again, nice thread with great pictures from you. Keep enjoying the bus and I hope your son gets the VW fever as well.

True, go OG whenever you can find it.

I think it's a matter of being selective about what you do when deviating from stock.
I like lowered, so that is a must. Using parts from other VWs maintains the quality of original design.
Things that don't affect reliability can be changed and not have you worrying about breaking down.
The things that are not stock, but help with reliability need to be some tried and true products, like Pertronix ignitions.

Engine check before a road trip.
checked gap of plugs.
All were much wider than the .7mm /.028" gap recommended for Mexican long blocks with the long reach plugs.

Finally installed Pertronix before No Dough Bus Show.
New NGK BP5ES plugs
Adjusted Valves per non-hydraulic settings at .006in.
Changed oil 5W30 Brad Penn.
replaced oil drain plate to VW original without center drain plug.
The only oil leaks seemed to be coming from this drain plug, no matter how much I tightened it.

Hey Don, nice to see another bus from the West Palm Beach area! I have a 1964 standard walkthrough that is in the process of being restored... Metal work is being done by Jason Stratton in Orlando, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of this month; then comes paint.

What are your plans for paint? Im still looking around for a good paint shop in the WPB area... Any tips?

Why not have Stratton Motorsports paint it? They do great top level work.

I'm aware of the quality of Jason's work (that's exactly why he's doing all the metal) but i intend to daily-drive this bus, and i don't want to be overly worried about scratching and messing up a $20K paint job... Jason only does show-quality work, and my plan is to first enjoy this bus (freely), and then, maybe in a couple of years, i might get myself a proper "trailer queen" type of bus...

There's also a few other reasons:

- I'm saving $ to buy a new house next year.
- I do not have a closed garage right now; i live in a condo, and for at least a few months the bus will only be protected from the elements by a cover.
- My bus is a '64 standard... Not sure if i should throw a $20k paint job on this bus right now... maybe in a few years it would make more sense, from a market value perspective. I'm already within the $30K range on this bus.

I do have the mean$ to do a nice paint job, but i came to the conclusion that is not the right time for it.

That being said, no expenses have been spared on the metal work; the bus will be properly undercoated, and all new and existing metal will be properly protected/sealed, then painted in a more "standard/daily driving" fashion (not a spray bomb / backyard job, but neither a 300 hours prep + ultra expensive paint).

I even started a thread on the whole "show quality vs. daily-driver" subject, in order to have the advice and opinions of other samba members:

Broke my bus on the way back from Bug Jam / Bulli Brigade.
Stopped for a quick inspection and stupidly used my scissors Jack at the body seam near the jack point.
This of course dented the body....
