Treated my ride to a new set of KYB Gas a Just shocks all the way around. My youngest who is now 13 and my companion cruiser helped me install. He is taking a full blown liking to the Thing. Glad to see he wants to learn to wrench as well. The others were installed when my build began 7-8 years ago. I figured they were getting weak.

scored full set in a Thing package from KYB on line discount site. $133 shipped for 4. Heck of a saving when compared to JBugs or CIP1 or etc. They were all over $50-$56 per shock. Even after discount, still over $50each.

no chance to test the ride. thunderstorms again all day till late. Miserable rain still here in STX.

Thanks Joe

Its been fun. I did the originql build with my oldest who was 13 or so at the time we started. He is now 22 and somewhat doing his thing. (pun intended).

My middle who is 18is big on sports and good at it. Mechanical, not so much. Cars, some appreciation but that is far as it goes.

Youngest has latched on. Good times.

catch you on the next update.

Pulled the pedal cluster out for a resto.. I'll be installing the beefy clutch rod from Unique-parts, as well as their accelerator pedal kit. I'll also be toying with an electric brake light switch that will send the brake signal Much sooner than the pressure switches now... I'm a lite braker, and often my brake lights never come on when stopping.... Confused

Lots happening in the shop this month!

Actually drove Thing today -- first time in 2015, first time ever without its top.

Thing was totally dead but I purchased a lithium-ion jump starter that would easily fit in a glove compartment or on the Thing shelf, and it fought like heck and got Thing started.

I'm still paranoid about taking Thing anywhere because even after a drive, it is still 50-50 as to whether it wants to restart on its own. I'll certainly take the jump starter with me as well as some regular jumper cables, but I can't wait until the engine gets rebuilt with an alternator so this nonsense can get sorted once and for all.

Nevertheless, it was fun to actually drive it again. Cool

Finally Rolling Eyes put in my shifter bushings... I truly thought I had done the front one already, but it was obvious that I hadn't. Embarassed

Also installed my fresh restored pedal cluster, with Unique-parts gear! Smooth as silk and looks good too! Wink

Tonight will be completing the New carb tuning. shes coming together quite well! I haven't made this much progress in a few years! Cool

In getting prepared for The upcoming Kubel Treffen show,
I finally managed to clean out underneath the hood again, loosened the gas tank and redid the gasket around the tank to the body and managed to get my gas tank vent fume recirculating system working!

I had bought the Thing Shop's anti-gas tank smell kit but was still getting A slight odor, the kit did help but it wasn't 100%

I had noticed that the vent line that goes from the canister on the Front driver side that runs to the rear air cleaner was stopped up, I pulled the junction hose underneath the passenger front and used some tubing and my air compressor and blew the lines out.

Also replaced my fuel line hose to the heater.and I replaced all the very small vent lines underneath the hood that help prevent gas fumes.

All I can say is Yay! No more gas smell! 😎

this morning the thing generator light went on...oh oh

after tracking down the issue, discovered that the generator was not delivering any current at all...

so after some acrobatic dismantling (without removing engine), discovered

there was a tiny short between windings and frame (the shiny small dot on the D- cable). So i will do some effort to isolate that.

adjusted camber and toe-in at front wheels .. Very Happy

man, it made a HUGE difference!

I always thought setting toe belongs to the "dark side" and I was afraid to do it by myself...turned out to be a quite simple operation.

Been a while since we got out. Loaded up with my youngest and took on Nifty Fifty's cruise night saturday night. still 96 degrees at 6pm. little warm for the first couple hours of cruise-in and drive to gathering. over 200 hot rods of all kind. we spent a good 3.5 hrs visiting with fellow car lovers. just one other VW in site. Nice split bus.

we did get several great compliments.

fellow enthusiast who's girl just sold her 2000 Jaguar vert, "This is my favorite of all the cars here tonight".

another, "we were just talking about Things the other day and said there was no way you could make them look good. Well you proved me wrong".

lastly, gentlemen with a 1936 all original Cord that had been in his family for 50yrs, thanked me several times for bringing our Thing out to the show. He was part of the show crew.

couple pics for grins

I stripped the seats and seat belts out - I managed to get the rear seats finished and will tackle the fronts during the evenings after work. The front seats look fairly rusty when looking under the covers. I hope to get away with sanding and wire brush but may need to have them blasted...not sure yet. I am planning on sanding the inside floor pan while everything is out.
