I know 1950 was the first year for a sliding Golde 3 fold ragtop VW installed and offered by VW. But I think there were some before that? Wabesco? I am sure I am not spelling it right. They had a wooden frame and we put into Goliath buses, DKW's and other German cars. What can people tell me about them? and then there is the roll backs? Tim

Webasto made them. There is one known from 49 at the Grundmann's collection. , Tuscher made rolldach conversions in Swiss. I think Rometsch made also sunroofs but that was not for vw.

Bruce Braun restored a very nice '46 in the early 2000s. He sold it to Jesse James in '07. It currently resides in the Eric Henrikson collection

This is the Webasto sunroof car at the Grundmann museum at Hessisch Oldendorf. Check out the twin handle opening system!

Now those cars are way cool! I am sure they were not coded in any way either. Am I right? I saw an early Ghia with one a long time ago??

I wonder how many Tuscher roll back sunroof cars might still exist? How did they fasten down to the roof? With turn buckles like truck tarps on the truck beds? Just asking? I heard the Swiss post office had them, and who else?

I think the price was $60k. What about the 4-door Papler Bruce had for $27k (which ended up in Florida)

Ray Schubert has a 49 Tucher rollback - he bought it from Ed Economy years ago. I think Ray said there were still 6 in existence - I remember we saw one at a auto show in Switzerland years ago in the local VW club booth area. It was owned at the time by a VW dealer in Switzerland who if I remember right has since sold it. There is a thread that shows pictures of it. Or you can see it if you search google image. It is gray.

I was wondering the same thing. How do they fasten down and are there bows or something in the ragtop itself to keep the top firm when closed?
