There is a good chance your beetle visited the international VW beetle meeting in Budel, The Netherlands: http://www.beautifulbudel.nl/index.php/en/
It's about 60 km from Mönchengladbach.

But, it was probably there before the digital camera age, so finding pictures of it on the internet will be difficult..

I found another difference between the 1996 floorpan and the 1972 floorpan. The throttle cable is somehow routed differently, and now the throttle cable is a few cm's to long.
Does anybody know what length off the 1996 throttle cable is? I will probably remove the current throttle cable and measure it, so don't go into too much trouble.. Smile

I scored this Beetles UK flyer, it arrived today in the mail.

It shows an open air version I haven't seen before. This version looks like it has a better seal at the front.

If anyone has one of these conversions, please post some photos.

They even converted them to right hand drive, I bet they weren't cheap.
The ragtop looks like good quality, it even has a wind spoiler.
And the engine has a V-belt tensioner, if you look a the small pictures at the bottom.
Also one of the small pictures shows the disk brakes, but it looks like the disk is on the wrong side of the wheel.. Smile

As we are talking about different versions of open-air beetles:

I recently found this advert in the Beetle - Split window part of the Samba forum:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

(source)

It was made by a swiss company called "Tuscher" that converted split window beetles to "cabrio-limousine" beetles.
An example:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

They say there are only five left of these.

There was also a Dutch company called "Coenen" that did them:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It could be none of these conversions survived. I've never seen one.

It's funny that they only did this giant ragtop at the start and at the end of the production of the VW beetle.

The Open Air only opens to the back window, it's more like the canvas sunroof's than the type of roof we have.

The Beetles UK flyer also shows electric windows and leather seats as options. They must have been pretty nice cars. I have a picture of the mph converted speedo from one:

I saw these older examples posted elsewhere and saved the pictures. I think I got the picture of the '49 off of facebook.

The description I saved for the '49 read: 1949 Swiss Army Tucher Rollback. It looks like the same car as the picture you posted.

even tough the picture angle makes it look bigger, I think that sunroof on the beetlesUK "open air" is actually the same britax unit that was popular through the eighties as an aftermarket option on 1200L mexi beetles.

That pic is from VW of Mexico of a prototype. The serpentine belt was never put into production.

That pic appeared in the mid 90s on 1600i official publicity material. IIRC there is an example also in the samba archives. Notice that all the pics on that beetlesuk folder are official vw pics with the exception of the ones showing the uk home brew open air version. Another prof that official images can't be safely used to derime questions concerning the actual production cars.

I posted this on another thread, but I'll add it here as well. I went to a show in Syracuse, NY last week and won first place in my class:

Congratulations! Well deserved.

I've finished my exhaust, I've welded in a O2 sensor bung in a standard exhaust.
I think this O2 sensor position is only useable if you have a removable rear apron.

I am almost ready to start the engine again, it hasn't run in a long time.

The rear fenders are fiberglass ones, I've bought these second hand. They are standard width, which is difficult to find second hand.

Gerrelt:

Looking good, I was wondering about your oxygen sensor when I saw that you were using an older muffler.

The fiberglass fenders look in good shape (and match).

(My neighbor has a '69 convertible and it took us a while to determine why something just wasn't right. The two rear fenders are very close, but don't quite match. The tire sticks out a little more on one side and the lights are slightly off. Not enough to notice unless you look for a few minutes.)

Are you still doing the roof this fall, I haven't forgotten about my (now 25 page) report that documents the roof. It's on hold until the fall, I'd rather be driving than writing. If so please take some pictures.

I do have to say, from your picture, the roof looks in better shape than mine.

Yeah I might do the roof this fall. Allthough I don't want to do it when it's too cold. For the fabric it's better when it's a little warmer, I guess 15 degrees celsius or more.
Our current roof is not good. There is a stitched 30 cm cut in it, and some small cuts where the roof-bows end. And there is a small cut in the rear window.

This evening we (I say "we", but I mean our 11 year old daughter Laughing ), started the engine for the first time after not running for one and a half years.
Of course, we made a video of it:

Link

It ran pretty smooth, right away. I am pretty happy with it! Cool

We've been having some warm weather this past week, in the 90s.

I took the second picture below today to contrast one I took in Jan; 103 degree difference. Note that I had the heat set to 90F in the first picture, and the AC set to 60F (lowest it will go) in the second. Oddly the compass reading is different ('SE' vs. 'S').

I finally had time to install the OE style hanbrake lever handle (311 711 327A) my wife bought me some time ago. I was not sure I liked the look over my previous home made attempt, but it is growing on me.

the flash makes it look blue-ish but under normal lighting it is as black as the rest of the lever.

installing it was a matter of minutes, also took the opportunity to swap the passenger's door loking knob as last week I had busted it with my elbow while cleaning the windows... Embarassed luckily VW classic parts had them in stock.

it was likely already cracked from being overtightened so it was not my fault... well not entirely.

I had a chance to visit Scotland with my car today, it was a short visit as the town has only 2 stop signs.

Took a picture of my car, still with the UK plate on the front, beside the Scotland sign:

I picked up this little piece of shrapnel the other day. It was jabbed just enough in the sidewall to ruin the tire. Fortunately no blow out at speed, just a flat tire when I came out to get in the car.

There was scrapping on the inside of the wheel well. I heard it when I was driving, but had (fortunately) only a couple km to my stop.

For now, I've got the 19 year old original factory tires back on the car:

Sadly, ( Crying or Very sad ) the show season is finished here, so I'm not really driving the car much until the spring.

I was able to track down an exact replacement tire in the US and I picked it up yesterday.
