The samba.com has everything you need.
Try looking in the Technical section up above (just below the banner ad).
9 digits sounds right for a 69. _________________ 1969 Beetle - "Olive"

Starting in June 1969 model year Beetle used a ten digit chassis number, and production continued with this sequence through July. This range of chassis numbers is
1191040194 thru 1191093704 (note third digit "9" for 1969)
Starting in August, the 1970 model year production began, starting with chassis number 1102000001 (note third digit "0" for 1970) |

Also check to make sure that your body plate (behind the spare under the hood) and chassis plate (on the hump under the back seat) match. If not you may have had a body swapped onto a different year pan.

My original post was made using the "teach a man to fish..." principle. That, and I was in too much of a hurry to put the link there _________________ 1969 Beetle - "Olive"

|
|
It seems to be missing a second “1” at the beginning. I am assuming from the notes here that it should be 1155711577 instead of what I see actually on the plate which is 155711577.
On this plate, the “15” at the beginning is embossed and the rest of the numbers are punched on top.
Am I figuring this out correctly? My best guess, from your VIN section, is that it was made in March 65.
Anyone want to check my work?

Thank you!
I was popping off the assembly line in April ’65 as well!
I guess she (my Beetle Ruby) and I were meant to be a pair!

Thank you! Very much!
Could I ask for your help on one more? I just picked up what I thought was a ’66 bus, but it appears to be a ’65.
The VIN is 225010590
Could you help me figure this one out too? Please and thank you!

3rd digit says 65, the M plate behind the RF seat will solve all the mysteries. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

1965 model year buses have emergency flashers, so they are often mistaken for 1966, as Type 1 and Type 3 VWs didn't get them until 1966. _________________ Thanks,

This looks normal to me
13 = model #. 13 = Super Beetle
4 = 1974
2 = 2nd generation of VIN #s
531094 - Car # 531094 off the 1974 production line _________________ How to Post Photos

Resurrecting this thread to decipher a new arrival: 1582033852. Using the above crib sheet, it would be
15 = model (convertible)
8 = 1978
2 - 2nd generation of VINS
033852 = Car 33,852 off the 1978 production line
? Thanks!

I'm new here. So I'd like to say hi. Hi. I read the post, went to the link, and I'm still a bit confused. I'm looking at a bug with a 9 digit vin#. Simple, yes? The 3# prefix is 114. According to everything I've read on here, and other sites, indicates that this would then be a 64. But that doesn't fall inline with the chart, which shows that it should either have a 7 digit vin or have a prefix of 115. Can anyone shed a little light on this, please? |

I don't believe that there was ever a 9 digit VIN that started with 114.
VIN's with the third digit indicating the year did not begin until the 1965 model year which started in August of 1964. |
