It is not leaking out of the hoses that go under the dash, the proper drains. It is not leaking around or at the windows. As I mentioned before, when we get a garden hose rain, the drains seem to get overwhelmed and water leaks from around the cowl, I would say from the vent seals after having seen pictures and read a few explanations. _________________ '72 Bus |

Mine leak cold air! If Bobnotch & 62notchrc can do it we're gonna have to "bite the bullet" and get ours fixed correctly too.

I have a box of 3M Strip-Calk #051135-08578 (Black). It is 12" strips of skinny Tootsie Roll like caulk/material. I used it to seat in a new battery box, but hadn't thought about using it on my fresh air vents! |
The stuff I used was on a big roll, like for doing a complete windshield. It worked great though. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yeah, I just installed mine a couple of weeks ago in my 65 Notch. There are 2 air boxes, with 2 flaps on each air box, using 2 cables per box, that go to the control levers. If you're really lucky, you still have the 2 plastic screens for the boxes, and you've already ordered up some new air box to body seals. I'd also make sure that the 4 M6 screws are in place along the firewall/front trunk, and the 4 studs have clean threads for installing the nuts that hold the boxes in place. I only mention that, as they're in a difficult spot to get to, and can be easily stripped or snapped off.
On my own car, I used a section pickup truck cap seal (plastic coated sticky foam) to rebuild the flaps with, as I didn't want any leaks like the OP of this thread was dealing with. I used more of the same roll on my 64 T-34 a couple of years ago. I originally bought the roll to do the T-34, and had a bunch of it left over. But, these flap pieces are one of the things nobody is reproducing for our cars, and as they get older, the rubber on them dries out and shrinks, leaving them in place, but not doing their job.
So far, I haven't found anyone who has come up with a better solution for fixing/replacing the flap rubber. It's really more of a thick dense foam, but by the time we see it, it's more like hard packed rubber. I'm sure McMaster Carr has something that would work too, but I haven't really gone looking thru their catalog, and they only sell stuff like that in 50 ft rolls. Quite a bit extra, when you only need maybe 2 foot of the stuff. Yes I had looked for some other sealing material similar to what we need, so I have an idea of what they sell. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Hey, Bob,
If you find a 50-foot roll of something at McMaster-Carr that looks like it will do the job, let me know.
I'll buy a big roll and send you as much as you want.
Having the cold air flowing all of the time is no bueno,
But i have definitely not been able to find anything remotely close to that 'foam' along the air flapper door dealies. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Close cell foam works on the flaps just fine and, it's the same as you can buy
at the big orange box or.........lowes , ace, OSH or any other hardware store.
OR, seal em up with GORRILLA SNOT _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

That's part of why I went with the pick up cap stuff, I could readily get it local, and it works (for now anyway).
But yes, the cold air coming into the car when you didn't want it was part of the reason I investigated some options on getting that area fixed. The other part was water entering the cabin while driving, since the flaps weren't sealing. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

This is good info. I'm in the process of restoring the air boxes from my 64. I have new box to body seals, all nuts in place, threads cleaned, air boxes blasted and painted & plastic screens blasted and painted. I was going to just leave the flap rubber alone.. however, it is hard, cracked and probably shrunk up quite a bit. After reading this thread, I'll make an attempt at the closed cell foam from Ace or HD or wherever. I'll take some good pics too.. This is a great reference thread.. can't hurt to have pics. _________________ Justin |

Yeah, I was going to post some pics up, but I was busy working on installing the air box seals, after I painted them (was multitasking). I did make sure everything worked, before I installed them though. I say that, as it's easier to work the flaps to check that they function outside the car, then when you have them in place and you're sticking your head up under the dash. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
