Does anybody have experience with an anti-theft tracking device? Especially if any are low cost, easy to use, and reliable. Thanks! |

ive always read about getting a cheap cell phone you can track. Basiclly you just keep it on and hidden in the car. |

I did a fair amount of research on trackers. Lojack was a good deal for what it is. One and done. My only advice would be to make sure you're there when they install it. |

Their deal is that you don't know where they hide it, basically so you don't disable it and then lay a claim against them. But that said, I know every freakin inch of my bus, so I'm sure I can figure out without much effort where they've placed it. _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

They have a tech in most states that can come to your house and do it. It's like anyone else on the food chain: The lower you are, the less you care about the rules. The install was done while I was at work and had electrical tape and foam everywhere. Wasn't hard to find. Wish I would have been there. I spoke to the guy over the phone and we talked about where I wanted it and he installed it there. I just think it would have been cleaner if I was watching. Otherwise pretty happy with it.
For what it's worth: Car dealerships often get a break on the price. So calling around and having it done there could save you a couple hundered. Call direct also and compare. |

I think that is what they are trying to prevent! _________________

Two types basically:
1) Lojack: short range, usable by cops only, but has a decent reputation over the years.
2) GPS transmitters: long range, and you can track it on your phone, set "fences" alerts, etc. But it needs cell phone access where the car is to transmit its location.
Both can be defeated by putting the car in a Faraday cage like a metal building or underground garage, or way out of town where the cops and cell towers fear to tread.
Look at monthly fees vs. insurance discounts for the net cost. |

Thanks, KTPhil. Do you know a brand name or source for the GPS transmitters? |

No specific experience. I just googled them and read reviews, especially the negative ones.
I won't let LoJack work on my car without me there. I've invested too much in the restoration to trust a stranger to work on a car he has in all likelihood never seen. So I am leaning towards the other cell-based systems but want to check into the monthly charges better. |

I used to install Teletrac back in the 90's when I worked at Ford. after the installation, we had to test it and they could never locate it. They sent one of their trained techs and same issue. We realized it was in our shop and once it was moved out side, it was located.Granted it was a different time and different technology, but like cell service, it can get sketchy with enough interference.
Make sure if you do get one installed, you get the back up battery. If not once power is cut, the system is dead. _________________ Mario De Leon
