|
|
Hey folks! I have a 56 Oval and am trying to determine what engine it has in it. Here is a pic of engine numbers from the back of the engine just beneath the carb:
I'm guessing the "67" means its a 67 engine? Any info appreciated. |

You have a pre-January 1956 engine case ("1-") with the right half of the engine number ground off and restamped.
Are there any numbers stamped on the right number of the generator stand?
Also, what are the three numbers in circles cast into the left side of the generator stand? This is the date when the case was cast (and will also tell you whether the case was made for a 25 or 36hp engine). _________________ Thanks,

Thanks for the info. I will check for other numbers the next time I have access to the bug. Its about 30 min away in storage.
So does it look like this could be the original motor?
Would the numbers be ground/restamped indicate the motor was rebuilt at some point? |

How would this tell you the hp?
25hp cases were cast well into the late 1950's. I have pictures of a factory rebuilt 25hp case cast in 1956. |

The "1-" is from the factory, which means the engine dates from before January 1956. If the case dates from ~Dec 1953 or later it, in all likelihood, started life as a 36hp motor. I do not believe any "new build" 25hp engines were made, once 36hp production started on 21 Dec 1953. _________________ Thanks,

Thanks for those pics EverretB. Looking at your pics compared to the one I posted, I am inclined to agree that engine numbers were ground (machined) off. If you notice how smooth the surface where the engines number are/were in my pic you can see a difference in the casting surface. As opposed to your pics where the surface is pretty consistent. |
