I'm reinstalling my TC. I've been through the Bentley manual and it doesn't say how to refill the ATF or how much to put in.

Any ideas?

Thanks -Tom

I thought I have read it somewhere, Tom, but all I can find is the capacity of the combined tranny and converter, both dry and refill, from an Aussie manual:

Converter/transmission (dry) ........... 10.56 Imp pts (12 US pts)
Converter/transmission (change) ...... 5.25 Imp pts (6 US pts)

If correct this means half the fluid is still in the tranny/converter when you drain it to change the fluid. The implies half the capacity is contained in the TC.

Consensus seems to be that you fill as much as you can, let the pump fill it the rest of the way, then top off the tranny. Folks who asked about a total change got answers implying you can't, and therefore should drain/refill several times to get rid of any crap in the fluid. If you only get half out each time and do it four times, you get over 90% of it changed out.

I remember one manual showing a siphon hose emptying the converter. I suppose a hand pump could refill it if it isn't easy to get access.

Thanks Phil -
I wasn't thinking the TC and the trans ATF communicated with each other, but of course they do.

This is what I learned and also, taught my students when I was an auto
instructor.

There are 3 things to remember since the converter has 3 parts that need to be filed when dry.

YOU FILL the turbine which is the large mass of the converter and, then
set the converter on the bench or floor and spin it with your hand to build
the speed up in order to move the fluid into the stator.

The stator is the part that moves the fluid clockwise into the turbine which, is much like water from a hose that you aim to blow leaves off the ground.
Pressure is forced to change direction since the vanes make this happen as they are angled and therefore push the fluid like an old wind mill.

so, fill the converter and then spin it like a top.and, centrifugal force will allow more fluid capacity to enter before you install it.

When checking the fluid level it needs to be done while the car is warmed up and running and on a level surface

I did that! Only because it was taking so long to fill, not because I knew what I was doing...
I put a full quart in it before i installed it.
Thanks for the info

Bentley also says to have the trans in neutral, with the parking brake on.

Would it be warmed up enough just idling for 5 minutes or so?

Probably closer to 10 minutes. How much total fluid have you put in the TC and the trans? You want to make sure that you have at least enough ATF for the trans pump to circulate it as you warm the engine and trans.

The trans was still full, I only took the TC off so I have it rechecked for balance. I ended up putting a quart and 3/4 in total. The ATF is so clean its hard to tell how full it is.

Seems to be shifting fine, just drove it around the block.

No sh1t....I still have one carb giving me fits, but I think the new engine configuration - 1835 - is a winner.

The Bentley makes checking the fluid sound easy. However, as you have found out, it is a little more difficult then it sounds. Especially if the fluid is clean.

Good to hear that it is back on the road.
