Thank you sir, I was hoping I could help someone by showing a step by step process. Even better is that everyone gives their input & experience to help out. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I fabbed & welded the gusset on the other spindle.
Here's what it looks like after welding with flux core wire before cleaning all the spatter & residue. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Well, I finally found a few seconds to rub together and assembled the passenger side.
Then I get to disassemble the drivers side & paint the trailing arms. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Hey Richard, no, I'll paint it too, I still need to relocate the steering box stops & limiters & the damper mount. As much as I'd like to go rack & pinion, I think I'll keep it simple for now so I can enjoy driving it as opposed to having another project that never gets completed. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I made some more time & started shifting the other components on the beam.
I started by removing the steering box clamp locating tab.
And then welded it back to the beam 2" back towards the center. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

You DO understand that will require new custom tie rods...Don't you? What are your plans for that? _________________ Richard

Hey Richard, fully aware of having to lengthen them also. as per your suggestion either here or elsewhere, I kept the swaybars from both beams & the tie rods from both also. I plan to cut all four tierods to achieve the correct length & stuff the swaybar inside the tierods & weld it all together. Or perhaps grab a set of tierods off a domestic truck (so I can use the larger tierod ends) & cut them down & just rethread the right hand threaded one. Let me know which you'd suggest, thanks. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Made some more progress.
I ground the old welds off the steering damper bracket, then coerced them off with a chisel & a BFH.
Then I welded it back on 2" closer to the center. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Well guys, there it is, all the fabrication on beam is completed, now I just need to clean it up, paint it & install it. This is effectively a 6" wider ball joint beam, the thing spindles add 1" per side & I added 2" per side with adding the adjusters. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

If you're prepared to ream the spindle steering arms out for larger tie rod ends, go for Ford F100/F150. Thees days, the aftermarket rack and pinion makers are boring theirs for International rod ends. International parts are getting hard to come by. But there is a new one which has the same stud size as International, but the same tie rod thread size as Ford. I recommend just going with the Ford rod ends. You could take a whole tie rod from a wrecking yard and cut it in half to make both outer ends. _________________ Richard

Well, I painted it this morning, I can't wait to start assembling it. I am going to lengthen the existing tie rods for now (since I have them) & will eventually upgrade to ford ones. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Lengthening the stock tie rods makes sense.
So did you move the pitman arm stops? _________________ Richard

Yes sir. It was a PITA, my 90* die grinder wouldn't fit between the tubes so i couldn't cut all of the welds with that so I finessed the rest with the sawzall. I just didn't point it out but it guess I should have so others would know to do so if they were silly enough to follow my lead. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
