Good evening,
I edited my post as it seemed to general and broad. My apologies.
I was looking for the typical suspension setups with possible images?
Seems there are a standard set of widths for beams and front trailing arms. I am attempting to figure out what front widths and trailing arms are used with which rear widths, and trailing arms? (Best Practices)?
At which point should I switch to Coil-Overs due to Trailing Arm Lengths?? (Best Practice)
This will be a dual purpose car, daily driver, mountains.
It will have a body lift, and It will be as high as I can get it for clearance.
It needs to be built on the cheap. I wont be able to spend a thousand dollars for half a shock.
I restore cars for a living. I have time to work and do the labor, I don't have deep pockets to throw expensive parts at this car. I would prefer to make my own parts, trailing arms, beams, etc... If I go with coilovers depending on trailing arm selection then I would again prefer to hit the wrecking yards and pull springs, coilovers, struts and modify them accordingly. If anyone has any suggestions or info that would be great.
Trying to get educated
Thanks in advance.

IMHO, 3" is the practical limit of higher without wider. you can get to 3" by bolting things on and swapping things.
Link pins: you can get more travel with longer arms, but you have to move the attach points forward to get the wheels in the same spot. this means more leverage, which means the link pin frame head is not going to work.
you need a roll cage to go beyond 3" lift. you increase the chances of rolling over if you exceed 3" lift without going wider.
the roll cage becomes an integral part of the suspension beyond 3" of lift.

Do search of Crumco Chassis, hard to beat for a proven car. 1fastbiguy and his son built one here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=545394

To facilitate you building bigger, better faster, longer, taller...It would help if we knew where you are.
Wider beams were originally intended to match the width at the outside edge of the tires front and rear with the typical slender tires in front and wide rims with wide tires in back. Wider rear arms were to increase suspension travel while keeping CV angles in workable limits.
But do you want to go tall for the sake of cruising the truck show lawns? Or do you want it for a more offroad worthy Baja Bug? OK, you say dual purpose, but we don't know what you mean by that. There's a whole lot of territory covered by that statement.
As to how that last question applies to your deal, for instance calling Crumco and telling them you want a tall Bug will get the phone hung up pretty quick. They build an excellent Baja Bug with lots of travel tho. But they aren't into building tall stuff for truck shows. We won't know who is close to help you put your car together or get you the parts you need if we don't know where you're at.
As for what you say about " hit the wrecking yards and pull springs, coilovers, struts and modify them accordingly" ...Ummmm..I feel you need to do a LOT of research before you go very far in that direction, regardless HOW good you are at restoring other sorts of cars. _________________ Richard

The other posters on your thread and I were asking questions trying to figure out just what you are trying to build.
Where in the world you are located affects what you can readily put your hands on. If you're in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia the parts you can get will be quite different from what one can find in Orange County California.
But you waited nearly a year to come back and tell us all to piss off. You never DID answer any of our questions. The answers you got were about all we could do with the information you provided. You're not likely to do any better anywhere with a bad attitude. If you don't think you're gonna get good answers from "experts", then feel free to go down to the bum on the curb at the corner and ask him.
A conversation requires at least 2 people to make it happen. An argument can sometimes be conducted solo. Go for it. _________________ Richard
