This is what happened to mine, and it's missing the last digit.
The guy selling beetle blanks in the classifieds doesn't have bus versions. |

if that's what the plate looks like, what does the rest of the bus look like?
can't help, but you may be able to work a stamped one flat, then re-stamp the numbers. may take a few for practice, but that's all I can offer... _________________

I got the bus with the VIN plate like this, the previous owner told me he too got the bus with the VIN as such.
As far as I know, the VIN plate number matches the chassis number except for the missing number after the 6 on the plate.
We don't need this plate for vehicle IDing purposes as authorities here use the stamped numbers in the engine bay and not these plates. But after having my vehicle restored, I would rather just have a nice one in the bus, compared to this nuked up piece of metal. |

That plate won't mean much in terms of anything. Unless you're just trying for the sake of restoration. Remaking VIN plates is a violation of federal law, so you're unlike to find someone doing it - let alone being public about doing it.
So long as your bus has the VIN tag in the dash, you should be in good shape. Even still, I've seen more than a few buses which had their dash replaced over time. _________________ Mike

My plate on my Beetle is worn away to the point that you can't read the numbers, but the rest of the car is in fine shape. Go figure.

That won't as it has the type 1 heater certificate and the 117 model embossed already.
I did see this and someone here is offering that version too. Thanks though
I did find someone in france, but I've emailed him and after a week no reply yet.

The VIN tag doesn't mean anything in legal terms where I am as the only real reference is the stamped chassis number, this plate is located behind the driver's seat (RHD), but just posting this here, hoping someone in Europe, S. America, S. Africa or Australia may have leads on it. |

the m-code plate is the build plate and not the vin. Obviously it all goes together but the vin on the chassis and the one on the dash must match.
FWIW we were watching a restoration show about 6 months ago on an American car from the 1960's and when the panels were all stripped off to the sub-frame, there were multiple vin numbers stamped into the sub-frame. Unfortunately the vin number on one major components did not match, and the highway patrol had to be called to check it against their database. It came back stolen so the whole project had to be surrendered. I suspect that there may be others on the bus we are not aware of besides next to the engine and dash. The ones on this American car required disassembly to reach. My 2006 RL, even though there is no comparison to a car 35 - 40 years ago, has the VIN on every body panel, and major part. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

I forgot to mention this is a 71 RHD euro spec bus, and the VIN tag is behind the driver's seat.
The bus was in bad shape, and with many panels replaced during restoration we did not find any numbers stamped within the frame.
But I do agree that many modern cars have VIN stamped pretty much everywhere. |

No, in the engine compartment. Forward right. Below the air filter. |

Wouldn't the stamping in the engine bay be the first and only stamping on the body then?
I thought Tcash meant that there was another location the VIN was stamped in.
I know that 71 and before was stamped on the sheet metal beside the battery tray, and post 71 was on the left side on the metal ridge.
So I think Tcash means:
1st vin location - VIN plate behind the driver's seat
2nd vin location - stamped onto chassis inside engine bay
Non-US markets didn't have the dashboard VIN, and my bus didn't come with one. |
