I am still trying to figure out a engine for my baja bug, i appreciate all of the information i have gotten so far. i was wondering if the 1.8 Subaru ohv needed a computer or if it is unnecessary, i am mechanically inclined and work at a auto shop but the newest car we have gotten to work on in the two years i have been there is a 57 ford, the engine is a 83 Subaru and the wiring says it has a computer but i think i could just wire it in like a normal engine and it would work. |

not trying to pick on ya. but if you start a thread you can take the topic in any direction you want. if you start a thread for every thing you'll get less interest.
And pictures always make Samba threads better so here ya go...

fuel injected engines run lean, and live long time. the computer runs the fuel injection. if you want the engine to run a long time, run fuel injection. ergo, run a computer _________________ 73 Beetle Baja, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 2220 ( 94 X 80 ), Weber Progressive, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

If it's an old enough Subie, like late 80s-early 90s, it would have an OBDI computer and would be easier to tune and hook up. _________________ Richard

Thanks it would be a older subie engine, can you bypass that computer, and what is its purpose in a carbed engine? |

Sooo, you lost me...what your saying now is that your engine is carbureted? _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Being from an 83 it could be either carbureted or fuel injected.... If its the later then the computer controls that...carbureted it shouldn't need or have a computer. |

Yeah, hard to answer a question with out knowing what it is. If it is carbureted, many late carbureted systems had electronic brains of sorts for controlling air fuel ratios based on temp and exhaust gas oxygen content, and also controlled simple igniting timing retard functions for lean burn systems. The Chrysler lean burn system is a classic example. Worked fine, but by the time it was discontinued on the 360 V8 in the early 90's, it had about the same amount of circuitry and sensors as many fuel injection systems of that era. Proved carbs could still provide good emissions, but there was zero cost advantage, and it had every bit as much brain power as a comparable fuel injection system. Thus, the carbureted V8 era was over...all be it more computer than machine by the time it gave up the ghost. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

You mention the engine being 1.8 & OHV, which means that it is an EA-81 Series... An old dog engine with little upgrade potential, ~75hp & 95lb-ft Torque... Not much better than an Aircooled VW engine.

Yeah, some stock air cooled VWs actually had more than that. Watch the head gaskets on those old motors. They often burned and leaked after as little as 50k. The past decade the gasket design was changed, so this hasn't really been an issue for the newer generations of suby boxers. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Pick a popular motor that you can buy a harness that doesn't have all the extra crap you don't need and it'll be a lot easier to wire than starting with nothing. If you already have a harness then it isn't terribly hard to wire with a schematic diagram. It's just time consuming as hell! One wire at a time. |

Which generations are you talking about? because this problem has persisted well into the mid 2000's
IMO, its annoying but if you are at mechanically inclined its only weekend project to replace and once fixed with an aftermarket gasket they seem to last forever.
But for that matter I really think its better to just modify an entire subaru to make it more suited to off road. In the NW you can get subies with blown gaskets for a song. _________________ Homemade woods/street, bug out rail.
