Pulled the engine out and mounted it on the stand for disassembly next weekend.
Then I'll measure the endplay and see if the bearing is loose in the case.

Thermoforming a new console idea. More rigid than a flat ABS panel and the gauges are angled towards the driver.

Finally got round to fitting the German Square weave carpet set I made a while back. What a transformation. Looks real nice Smile

Now I want to make some overmats. Anyone know where I can buy the coco carpet that had the colour fleck in like the vintage sets?

I had one of those DUH moments
I'm rebuilding a 1600 B cased engine to replace the 1500 with a bad #4 rod
thinking every thing would be good. I was planning on keeping the '62 Notch 6V and also planning on using the 1500 flywheel. Then I discovered different between the 1500 and 1600 flywheels beside the 6 / 12 teeth and O ring / paper / metal seal

so unless somebody has any suggestion it looks like I'll be converting to 12V.

Or Could the lip on the 1500 flywheel be machined off?
cheers
Hank

PostPosted: Sun Sep 06, 2015 1:05 pm    Post subject: Finishing Gas Cap restoration project Reply with quote

I have 4 gas caps. One of the summer projects was to get them sorted, cleaned, and restored for two restoration projects I have underway. (A 69 Squareback and a 69 Fastback.) I don't have a before picture, but they were the typical worn out gasket, cad plating mostly worn off, but no rustiness. Three are from tear downs I have done, and one was purchased at a swap meet.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

From left to right:
larger diameter (65mm outside) from a 68 fastback tear-down (restored, no new gasket yet)
smaller diameter (60mm) from swapmeet (restored, new gasket not on yet)
smaller diameter (60mm) from 69 fastback tear-down (restored, new gasket)
smaller diameter (60 mm) from 69 squareback tear-down (cleaned, not restored, new gasket)
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Restoration process was:
Clean off any grease/oil dirt
VERY light pass with glass beads in blasting cabinet
Remove remaining CAD plating with acid dip
Neutralizing rinse
Clean water rinse
Zinc plate using Eastwood's tin zinc plating kit
Polish with Eastwood Simichrome

So here is cleaned but unrestored cap:

Here is newly plated and polished cap:

Plated before gasket:

Plated after gasket install. New gaskets available from Jay Salser here on TheSamba:

Of course, that doesn't get the "golden" CAD look back. But not all of these originally had the "golden" CAD; some had the "silver" CAD.

Also, anybody have insight into the the two different sizes? The parts book calls out a 65mm, but doesn't make mention of the switch to 60mm. Did I just happen to get cars that had Ghia gas caps? Or is there some other explanation?

Thanks in advance.

Yes is a lot easier to machine the flywheel
but remember LEAVE enough lip so the O ring can stay
is NOT that much to cut and is NOT all the way either

store from Texas they have 6V flywheels with O rings
but the problem they are Lightweight and you what the Heavy Stock weight

and even better if you have a 200mm cluch plate

Pedro for president
I'll try to find a machinist and send both flywheels the 1500 and the 1600 to show the O ring
thanks for the tip
