Whats up guys and gals! New to the board, already absorbed a ton of info and thank everyone for that! New to air cooled vw except my dad had 5-6 at a time when i was a kid and spent plenty of time helping him keep the girls alive.
I recently picked up a 72 squareback and im stoked to say the least! She is gonna be a fun project and have met alot of very helpful vw folks already.
So, she isnt running, it cranks fine and almost starts(it will stumble and try her best with starting fluid) but i suspect its a fuel delivery issue because i have spark. The engine is a dual carb 1641. I have a line on a 2100 long block at a good price so i am contemplating pulling the 1641 and dropping the 2100 in there. Is there any foreseeable obstacles with that swap? I am very mechanical and have no issues with fabrication or stuff like that.

Welcome, you may have an issue with the oil dipstick if the motor is from a type 1, but other than that go have fun _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Ok thanks guys! Turns out the 2100motor was built with an insanely high compression ratio and being that this will be a daily driver and i dont have a steady supply of cash or race gas that motor is out, looking around for another motor now, cant wait to get this thing dialed in. |

Get this 1641 with stock dual Solex carburetors running. Buy a stock big black air cleaner that hooks up to the fresh air outlet in the right rear corner & the engine will run a lot cooler.

Since there's no mechanical pump on that engine, there must be an electric pump mounted up near the fuel tank. It's probably not running because either it has no power from possibly a bad ground, or a blown fuse. Or the pump itself is kaput (possibly the original FI pump). For carbed engines, I've found the Mr.Gasket 42S pump works great with those carbs. It also works good with Weber ICTs. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks for all the info and advice folks, So being that i wanna get her on the road asap, i pulled the trigger and got a rebuilt 1600 long blockto swap out the existing engine. I started on the swap sunday morning and managed to get it all installed by myself.
the longblock before install
here the old motor is out, ready to dress the new motor out.
since i had everything out and off, I cleaned, wire wheeled and painted the tins to make it look good. sirry if you arent a fan of green hahaha, my other vehickle is a camo painted van hahaha
after spending all day at war with the engine i was done, still need to set the timing etc, if you guys have any tips or advise to share prior to starting her up i would love to have it, thanks |

Well, got everything back into the square, had some other issues to work out. The car wouldnt shift to 3rd or 4th, took the shifter apart and found the plate was backwards so flipped it and made a few tweeks and she shifts like a champ. I dont have a air flow guage so i need to have the carbs synced but i geeked out on the carbs and got idle and everything to settle in as good as possible and thats ok for rite now. I had an oil leak from the cooler seals so had to tear that off and figure it out but she isnt leaking no more so im stoked. Got the headlights working and took it for a drive and had a blast! Thanks to all the info on the boards i managed to get her going so thanks all of you for that. |
