Trying to decide if I should rebuild my steering box on my '66 bug. I've read that it's too much trouble, and that buying a new one is the best, safest option. I haven't been able to find any write ups or tutorials on the rebuild process, and I understand you can't find rebuild kits? I'm so confused!!! Brick wall d'oh! Trying to keep from buying a new aftermarket box if I can avoid it, buy any help or advice would be appreciated.

I rebuilt mine. Probably 3 hours total including taking it off and putting it back on. Although the car was out of commission for a week waiting for parts. I had to stop and order all the metal clips that keep screws from turning, mine were disintegrating. It was very informative taking it apart and checking the play in the bearings and bushings. All were tight so I just put it back together and packed in lots of grease. Had there been any discernible play I would have sent it out for a rebuild.

Can you tell us who you got the parts from? I want to overhaul mine as well.

Yeah, I'd like to know where to get parts as well. My car is currently in a body-off state, so I'm in no rush. Wink

I did not know seals were available. The only parts I ordered were all the little metal bits that get bent to prevent the nuts from coming off. I made a new paper seal for the top from a vanilla envelope. I am content with the grease instead of gear oil, I am sure things will be good for the next decade.

For my 66 steering box, I bought my seals here:

I can get you the part numbers after work if you still need them.

Yes, that'd be great, thank you.

I live in a small rural area, and don't have a lot of options for buying parts aside from ordering them in. However, after trying all my local parts stores for replacement seals I went and tried our John Deere dealer on the off chance they might have them. The parts guy was the only one to go the extra mile and find what I needed. Took a week for them to be shipped, but he got them. $9.00 for the seals, $9.50 for shipping. Just an option you can try.

Thanks. I actually picked up a set from the classifieds for about $15 shipped. Although I have yet to rebuild my steering box, I did purchase a set of plugs from Lowe's for about $1.20 These are the 2 plugs on top that are usually very brittle and should be replaced if rebuilding the steering box.
