1969 Beetle I just bought yesterday. What is the slightly u shaped hose with what looks like a breather on the end. The other end of the hose is coming off of the carb...

It's a part of the exhaust gas re circulation system.

It's a smog device that has seen it's day. Take it out and save it for posterity. But plug up the hole--for sure.
