I have a 1600 double port that I am replacing the intake boots on to cure a vacuum leak. I have inspected the castings and the pipe. both are in good condition. Have new boots from Wolfsburg.
I am now ready to install the new boots. I do have the engine out for more checking, so replacement is easy.
My question is, does any one use any kind of sealant on the joint? If so what is good? Would red silicone be good? Or is it best to install the boots with nothing on them?
Thanks to you for any help or suggestions.
Ken

No, but I never had good boots. A functional alternative to boots is using radiator hose with big ol hose clamps.

All you need is the boots. Wolfsburg West ones are superior to others I've read about on this forum. I used them and no issues.

They should make a special tool for getting those rear nuts off, damn.

That is all.

I neglected to say that you also need the clamps!

Make some tools, like cut-down and ground-down wrenches, use sockets with universal built in, use 1/4 inch drive tools, use wobbly extensions, even use steel nuts that use a 12mm wrench for clearance (have same thread of 8 x 1.25mm), available from Japanese vehicle parts department (called JIS nuts) and even at Ace Hardware near me.

I have replaced my boots that were cracked when I got the non-running dune buggy I have. I used the red silicon boots. I used a small wipe of white lube grease to help the parts slide together and to improve the seal (not that it may have needed improving). The lube did help when trying to wrestle the manifolds on, working around the tight space of the alternator perch and intake manifold studs.

You never use sealant on plumbing deafeats the purpous of an air tight seal. you could lap it in with a pin tip of white lithium.

I believe he's talking about the nuts that secure the end castings to the cylinder heads.
