FWIW, I think seat belts are good in splits to keep you in place in the event of an impact, not to really offer much protection. The whole structure will crush around you.
when I had my accident, I think a seat belt would have left me worse off i my '66. _________________ Kevin Albrecht

In typical SG fashion, they're now $30 pr.
I just ordered 4 on ebay including shipping for $60.
Thanks to those who've posted ideas, pics, and experience in this thread. |

Because if it were four pair that would be an unbelievably good price. _________________ nothing |

I ordered a set. Drivers-side installed.
These work great. spool can be installed any direction.
Any slight tilt in all directions lock the belt. This is good for a splitty as spool can be mounted on bulkhead panel for clean look.
Box came full of parts three different packs of aircraft rivets, aircraft quality aluminum brackets and shoulder bolts. |
These are the parts I used/modified from the box of parts sent.
the only extra parts bought were two nylock nuts.
I deleted the large round plate in pic that is from a 944 Porsche and made a different bracket that is pictured with install.
Made this to pull on bracket to drill for rivets supplied with kit.
There where three different shoulder bolts. Each bolt when put in the proper place allowed brackets to move freely.
I decided on mounting spool on bulkhead panel rather than seat pedestal with L-bracket. Pulling is upward motion, this is the strongest attachment point.
Made brackets to fit contour to mount as high up as possible.

That plate on the back of the bulkhead will need to be welded to work right. Otherwise the bolt is just going to slice up the panel and the plate is just going to slide up with it. Then with a big enough slice the plate could fold up and pop thru.
Pretty sure the reason VW did not just attach belts to the hidden storage under the seat is that it is not strong enough, and again the bolt could just slice thru if plate not welded in place.
Long bracket below goes under bus and ends welded to the frame.
The earlier chassi used a more intricate bracing there.

That is good info.
I have all the brackets from a 66 bus and a 67 bus and they are no where near the structural design of the 1962 info you have presented.
I will come up with something different for the bulkhead because of the idea of the bolt slicing up the bulkhead. _________________ .

Do you have the brace that was welded to the frame? If so please post the thickness and width of the material used. Have wanted to make that part, but have never gotten a hold of one. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

ah! I'm using the vanagon receivers with their "arms"... just like used in the vanagon. It works since my bus is a walk through. If it weren't a walk through I would use the vanagon rear seat receivers, that have the belt material instead of the arm.
heres a pic of what im using from a vanagon

So, I've read this thread and a few others, but I'm still a bit confused.
I have an April 1966 bus that came with stock lap seatbelt mounting points in the front cab area with the reinforcement brackets under the bus to the frame.
That said, I want to add in 3 point belts. I'm still a bit confused about two stock looking holes in each pillar.
Below are two pictures of the left & right pillars in the cab.
I think I've learned through the threads that the top smaller hole is for the coat hook on both sides, is that correct?
But, what is the larger stock hole for right below the small coat hook hole for? Was that there deliberately so that it could be used as the third mounting point for a 3 point system?
Did 1967 buses come with an option for 3 point, if so, is the larger hole the mounting point too? Does anyone have a 1967 example with original 3 point belts?
I guess, in a way, I'm also trying to determine if the larger hole is a good place in terms of height to use for the 3 point?
I plan to buy these to use in the pillar. http://www.wescoperformance.com/mountingplate1.html
Any insight or help is greatly appreciated. |
