I'm not certain if this is a standard beetle or a deluxe having both chrome and painted trim. The photo is dated 3.3.51 and was taken at Maschsee Hannover.

That would be my fault. I didn't have a scanner available so I took a picture of a picture. The angle combined with slightly curved edges on the photo make it appear as it does. I wanted to clarify this not only to point out the beetle is not modified but I also wouldn't want anyone to think the persons in the photo have fat calves and large feet Wink .

Looks like an early '49 standard Beetle with deluxe trim added.

I'd say you're onto something there. Grooved bumpers and football mirror. (no horn grilles in fenders etc.) It has painted hubcaps and bumpers like a standard but I noticed not just the chrome side trim per deluxe but wiper arms, headlight bezels and hood handle are all chrome.
